Grease oozing from latch on rear hatch
Hi,
I read some posts about the yellow glue oozing from the hinges but does anyone have any issues with the grease oozing from the latch on the rear hatch? We just bought our X5 in May and once them temp climbed to 100 degrees we noticed a streak of grease on the lower hatch. Then we saw another X5 with the same exact problem, so just wondering how big of a problem this is. Thanks Lauren |

It's hard to tell if that is cosmoline seeping. If this is your first X5, water and dirt builds up over time on the top of the lower split tailgate and will drip after a wash. It's a good idea to take a towel or soft rag to the lower split tailgate to clean and dry.
Cosmoline (rust preventative) applied during manufacturing. Most of it gets washed off at VPC and ends up inside the door where it seeps out - more so during summer months when it gets hot. You can use a mild detergent or solvent to clean it off. Just don't let it sit for too long as it'll harden and becomes a pain in the arse to clean it off later.

One thing that can help aid in removing cosmoline is a hair dryer on low to just warm it up before attempting removal. You definitely want to avoid applying a lot of pressure so as to minimize the chances of scratching your paint.

Mine is doing that! Both sides of the car where the door latch is and the trunk. I burned probably 1000 calories scrubbing for hours getting it off. So annoying

The “New” Touaregs had this annoying design flaw that resulted in washer fluid dripping in hot weather from the washer nozzle on the rear hatch. The route they chose to run the line coupled with the heat, caused a siphon of around 4 psi to form. The solution was to install a check valve but unfortunately, VW only made a 1 psi valves so it didn’t do much. The only thing that would work was to obtain a BMW 4 psi valve which of course VW would not pay for. It looked similar to this grease leak but was more damaging and they refused to fix it.

The oil comes from the little hole in the upper tailgate
Will ask my BMW dealer this morning if they know this issue and if there is a solution Last edited by lechuck; 06-30-2020 at 12:18 AM.. Reason: incorrect image |

Not that this adds any value, but in the pic my CA sent me - from the factory delivered, there is literally white transport film about 2-3 inches wide in this same spot on the lower hatch.
