Help me decide on which M3 and also look at my last one

I have been away from BMW’s for a while now but looking to get back in. I am looking at either 2015-2017 M4 or M3. Is there a year I need to stay away from and what are the pros and cons between the M3 &M4? I found a 2015 M4 with less than 25000 miles that looks nice. Help me decide what to do. My last BMW build

2018 F80 M3  [10.00]
2013 BMW E93 M3  [10.00]
That is a very nice E46 you got there. I would keep her.

Damn that e46 is sick. There are no years to stay away from, although the DCT in later year models is supposedly a little smoother at low speeds than in the 2015s. I can’t verify that as mine is a 15 and I’ve never driven a newer one. If you are going 6MT it’s irrelevant anyways. Of course get a PPI done and check service history. Pros and cons of the M3 vs M4 is literally just looks and number of doors. I found the M4s to be slightly cheaper on the used market and that made the decision for me as I don’t use the back seat. If I had kids I would have gone with the M3. Happy hunting!

I know they changed the exhaust tone from either 15 on or 16 on. Also the competition package is an absolute must in my book, you won't regret it. I had an 2018 m3 comp pack manual, the manual felt a little squishy compared to my current m2c. Other than that it's the perfect every day car and with a press of a button can be the most savage highway killer pulling as hard as ever in 4th gear all the way up to 140! You'll roast those tires with the power so put away some money for better rubber.

Well I sold it a while back because I needed more room. Now my son is about to be driving so I am ready to get another car.

So there are no big changes between a 15 and 16 model?

Early 15s had the magnesium oil pan and different drain plug I think...when I was shopping I didn't find any substantial differences so took the first one that popped up low miles white and MT...it's a 15 and has been great so far.

I had a 15 6 speed. Now I have a 17 6 speed competition package. Get the comp package. The 6 speed is also a joy to use.

Re: Comp pack, it depends. I would generally agree with you (my F80 is comp pack) but based on OP's prior heavily modded E46, it may not make a lot of sense if you end up swapping out wheels, suspension, exhaust etc?

OP - I had 2 E90s before F80 and legroom for kids is a bit better in F80. My kids are 5'5" and I'm 6'3" with no issues.

I loved my E46, wish I still had it. But it did t have a lot of legroom so that's good to hear.

Love that imola e46!!! Would definitely recommend comp pack. Love the seats and blacked out trim even if you end up modding everything else. Shouldn't be able to negotiate the price with comp.

Not knowing if this matters to you, I will throw it out there as an added piece of information. In 2017 BMW updated the Nav unit to NBT EVO with better interface, faster and I think more options.

Miss my old Imola E46 M3. Yours was a beauty!

Tommy's video is a good breakdown to see. You'll see some of the subtle updates as the years progress (seats, lights, etc.). I currently own a 15 M3 and it's my first F80 (had too many M3's to count now) and it's by far my favorite of all the M3's I've owned.

I absolutely love DCT, but I do plan to move into a 16/17 6MT here soon.

Good luck on the hunt!

I have a 2015 M4 with 34,000 miles; 6MT, SO with SO/black full leather, moon rooof, and I'm still loving it. I ordered it in July 2014 and got delivery the following November just before Thanksgiving that year. No, mine's not for sale, I'm hanging on to it.
