Well, I can tell you that my M550 is Sapphire Black and my wifes 2017 X3 was Carbon Black. My car looks metallic black in pretty much all conditions. Her car looked dark blue in most conditions. She would argue that, despite BMW calling it "black", it was blue. The darkness and depth of that blue would change, but it always looked blue to her.
My car always looks black to me. |

Carbon Black has a midnight blue way back in the paint behind layers of black and clear coat. It changes color depending on the light. Black at night and Batman blue in the day in direct sun but the curves and angels will be darker to black. It changes as you move. It’s BMW’s most stunning color and will look 10’ deep but it comes at a cost of showing dust more. There are no free rides.

My friend got a Sapphire black and I got Carbon black. I would any day go for Carbon black again. I like the way Carbon black changes shades in different lighting conditions whereas Sapphire black is always black no matter what!!

Tough question, because one is black and one is (imo) dark blue.
They both look great freshly clean and waxed. They both show every single little bit of dirt, dust and scratch if you look a them hard. I lease, so I don't spend extra $ on PPF or anything like that. I actually prefer my wife's 2019 Phytonic Blue X3 over either of them. Carbon Black is a more interesting, complex color. I have sworn an oath to myself that this Sapphire Black car will be my last Black car. |

I just this conversation with my sales guy yesterday. My current 2017 X6 is black sapphire metallic. If you take care of the paint with a good wax and cleaning maintenance, it stays looking awesome even between washes. That said, we talked about the carbon blue fighting / clashing with the black too much. I've seen it on the road, and the only time it looks black is at night. I see a lot of the blue color during the daylight, which told me black is the way to go for me. The elegance of the black is what I'm going for.

I ordered black sapphire with the shadowline trim. Dealer had one on the lot and I loved the way it looked.
Knowing me I will change my mind fifteen times and wish I got red. |

As always, love your ride and pics.
Is that your winter wheel and tire setup? What size and tire brand? Btw, love the side mirrors? Which ones are they and where are they available and cost? Thanks for the help. PM me if you prefer. Peace. |
