Centre screen goes blank
Hi All,
I have a new X5 with a problem that BMW tell me is unique. Randomly the centre display goes blank. I lose all information. At the same time I lose all navigation and media information from the HUD and the instrument cluster loses its info. The only info that remains is speed. This lasts for around 1 minute then returns. There are other oddities but I just want to discover if anyone else has had this problem and if so how was it fixed. Any help would be appreciated. |

On reading the other thread I can see several similarities. I took mine into the dealer today as this has happened over 30 times now however my speed has always continued to work. In my case I also suffered a freeze of the instrument cluster when the system rebooted however nothing worked even though it was showing information. Not very impressive for a new expensive motor....
I did get a chance to speak to the "specialist technical guy" who mentioned that BMW have "around 2 software updates every month" and that my car hadn't been updated since July 2019 (I took delivery Nov 2019) and he was very confident that the software update would cure all. He also mentioned that there was one or two new features associated with the new updates - has anyone any idea how true that is? |

Hi All,
An update to my blank screen problems. After all the software updates it made not a scrap of differences to my problems. In fact it created more with a series of spurious electrical problems. The upshot of it all is the car is back in with the dealer again and I have a hire car as there is a "backlog" of 7 to 10 days for a new control box |

Okay, after 1.5 month of problem free ownership, I experienced this blank screen first time today. Not a big deal, it recovers by itself after about a min or so. I was driving in stop and go traffic with GPS while compose a text message by voice. The car has problem understanding what I am saying. After a few try, the infotainment screen went black and the navigation screen in between speedometer and tachometer went black as well. Both screen went black for a min and came back normal. I didn't even lose my navigation. Also FM radio keeps playing with no issue. This looks very much like a runaway process and then a watchdog comes in reset the process.

I'm afraid it's probably not a simple bug, even if it is just software. I have a near daily wipeout of the central dash cluster now - exact same as the image posted, and it only returns after I've let the vehicle fully shut down and turn off. It's happened at highway speeds often and is scary as heck, and dangerous to the point where I filed an NHTSA complaint as well. I've had 10+ service appointments with BMW with multiple software updates as well as a dash cluster replacement, I've gotten BMWNA involved, and my only recourse is now taking them to court via a lemon lawyer which I'm in the process of doing. Quite disappointed in BMWNA customer service after this episode, having been a lifelong fan of the brand.
