Big difference in sound. Much louder growl in sporty. Pretty mild in reduced. I haven't checked the exhaust flap.

I believe this isn't actually "engine".... it's just "sound".
The noise coming through the speakers.

This is the first I remember this being used, M5: BMW M5 generates fake engine noise using stereo https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/b...-using-stereo/ Also, I don't have these menu options on my x-line 40i. But I'm not sure that means I don't have the artificial sound, or just that I can't adjust it. Anyone know? |

Found that setting on mine too! Didn’t get a chance to play with it. I previously had an F150 with the twin turbo V6. Ford used the sound system to pump in real V8 grumble. I’m not an expert but it was pretty convincing.
On a side note...I had a friend upgrade the stereo in the F150 and somehow the grumble got ‘upgraded’ too and he said the low rumble from the subwoofer ruined the entire acoustics! They had to rewire to get it out of the loop. I don’t remember the specifics but it was amusing. |

IMO this kind of "technology" is pure BS. Not a fan of artificial sound. If BMW and other manufacturers are so ashamed of the actual sound of their engines, shame on them.

Ashamed? I had a different but similarly skeptical reaction years ago when I heard about this with the M5 (why would they even need to do that with that huge engine?), but I think it is missing the point. From what I understand, the cars these days are keeping outside noises out so much, they're just trying to put the engine sounds people actually want to hear back in the car, and even if artificial, they're doing it (or trying to) in a way that sounds exactly as it would naturally. Some people may like the quiet acceleration with no audible sound of the engine revving, but I think that audience is still the minority.

Otherwise people would be complaining that they just bought a $100k car and can hear every car pass by on the highway. The cars are so well soundproofed you rob the car enthusiast of a key element of the driving experience - the crackle and pop of the exhaust! |

I'm in the camp that Active Sound Design (ASD) is one of the worst synthetic embellishments that car makers have been relying on. Here's a typical scenario that I encounter with passengers. I switch to Sport drive mode in anticipation of quickly accelerating into a highway then ASD suddenly gets louder without a change in how I'm pushing the car. My passenger hears this change in sound and asks "what's wrong with your car?"
Sure, cars are becoming more quiet inside which has a tendency to isolate the driver from the sounds of the engine or exhaust note. However, some of these sounds that are so enjoyable are low notes that are also the frequencies that penetrate insulated glass well. I can hear that RS's exhaust note just fine when I'm pulled up along side one at a street light (yes I know Audi and Porsche uses their own form of ASD too). However, I can only hear by own car when I have ASD activated. That doesn't seem right. ASD is well done and I can understand the argument that many sport sedan or luxury car buyers wouldn't want an always loud exhaust note but there is a nice middle ground. I do find the synthetic amplified exhaust sound to be a bit nauseating in a way that I never found my M Roadsters's exhaust to be. I that car I would enjoy driving with the top down and the radio off just to hear the harmony of the quad exhaust. |

I understand the need to “enhance” the exhaust note into the cabin for engines and exhaust combos that don’t produce it naturally but the V8 with M exhaust certainly doesn’t need any help or enhancements. To me it’s like gilding the Lily.
