Integral Active Steering - Turn off?
Hi All
I have air suspension & IAS & whilst I love the steering at lower speeds, I’d like to try driving WITHOUT it turned on at higher speeds as I find it makes the car a little figgity. Anyone know if I can turn it off when I’m on the motorways? I don’t want to permanently turn it off, just when I hit the highways. Thanks all. J |

I would assume if it could be turned off/on...it would be detailed/explained in the owners manual. When I look up that info from one of the online downloadable G05 owners manual...it does indicate that IAS can be turned off at low speeds below 30 MPH when SNOW CHAINS are installed (thanks Dorsicano for pointing out the text in the paragraph about using snow chains...see page 348 in the owners manual ). It also has different "tuning" parameters based on which driving mode you're in:

Interesting. I must say I don’t notice it at all on mine at higher speed. I came from an F15 and as you say IAS is a God send at parking speeds but at higher speeds I can’t say I notice it at all. In fact I’d like to disable it so I can try it without to see how the car handles differently with it off line!
Parking is amazing. One underground garage I use has such tight ramps in my old F15 I’d have to drive up and then reverse to get the right angel for the tight turn onto the ramp. Now I just drive straight round with so much spare room the parking sensors don’t activate! |

Thanks for this post, I didn’t realise it adapted according to the drive mode, good to know |

Good catch...I edited my reply to indicate to see page 348 in the owners manual which shows how to go into iDrive to indicate snow chains are installed...which will turn IAS off at low speed. But will not address highway speeds and the rear wheels turning in the same direction.

Same experience and complaint so far... although my read so far is that fidgety is an understatement. I'm going to try snow chains mode just to see the difference at low speeds, but my most negative experiences with IAS seems to be while slowing down through 30mph-ish or so where it's calibration seems to jump.

I also have the integral active steering on the dynamic handling package. I’m not sure is works at all. I turned the front wheels to lock, got out and saw no change to the rear wheels.

Not sure you can see it. I have it on my X7 and when I cut the wheel hard while parking, I can feel the rear wheels "hop." The feeling is not unlike transfer case binding.

I haven't bothered to look at the rear wheels from the outside but I also wouldn't be surprised if there was no noticeable visible change in rear wheel angle when turning the steering wheel while the vehicle is static. Now this thread has me curious and I may take a closer look this weekend. |

You won't see a noticeable change as the maximum steering angle of the rear axle slip angle control HSR in the G05 is 2.5°.

They don't seem to turn when stopped, but you can see it when you are moving. I adjusted the driver mirror to watch the rear wheels and could see them turning while moving.

It just seems hard to believe they would be of any value if it wasn’t obvious that you could see them change in angle. If you backed out of your driveway with full wheel lock, stopped and got out then how could it not be visible?

It doesn't seem to take much to make a difference. I can definitely feel it when driving. As someone who doesn't drive with IAS every day, when I do drive the X5 it feels like the rear is on coasters and the wheel base feels shorter than the car's actual wheel base. I realize this is subjective.

But you really feel it. My car is being detailed this weekend and I have a loaner. Clear difference on roundabouts and parking lots The feeling shifting of the rear drivetrain on higher speeds I never noticed. Not on 19 inch winter and not on 20 inch staggered summer. AS is standard. My wife has been driving it first during holidays. I asked her after a week and she didn't notice anything weird. She doesn't know the car has IAS and she doesn't know what it does anyway. |

I've observed our X5 with IAS as my wife pulled out of the driveway and the steering angle of the rear wheels, while modest, is definately observable.
It's effect on turning diameter is also quite obvious to me. We have a turn around between curbs I regularly make and where I cleared the opposing curbs with our F15, it was only with a modest margin. By comparison, the G05 with IAS clears with a few feet to spare. I read somewhere IAS reduces the turning diameter by 3 feet. From my observations it appears to be a bit more than this, but I'm comparing my previous F15 to the current G05 with IAS. If the G05 without IAS has a smaller turning diameter than the F15, then the difference with IAS would be even greater. |

Makes a considerable difference slow speed parking - much smaller turning radius. None that I could feel driving 75-85 mph, but haven't gone beyond that yet.
