have wastegate rattle again, is it bad for engine? or can i wait?
Hello everyone,
Just bought an 07 335i with 25k miles on it, previous owner said he just had a wastegate actuator replaced recently and said he thinks it was only one of them. Two days later after having the car now I have the infamous rattle on decel from 2000rpm to 1500rpm. Does this issue negatively affect the engine in any way? I'm moving within a week and don't want to have the car in the shop for up to two weeks until i'm settled in a couple weeks. Is it ok to hold off on taking it in? or is it bad for the engine, etc? Also could it be something else? Very slight metallic rattling/ticking between 2000 and 1500 rpm. |

No harm at all. Just annoying. I'd wait for another couple of months until BMW has an fix/update that doesn't result in decreased boost response.

The important excerpts from the bullitin, for those interested: 1) Run test plan. 2) The test plan will conclude with an instruction to replace the wastegate actuators; ignore this instruction. Reprogram the DME; improvements are included with the following I-Levels: E90, E92, and E93 (335i and 335xi), E89x-08-03-530 or higher 3) After programming is completed, if the noise is no longer present, take no further action. If the noise is still present, replace both of the turbocharger wastegate actuators in accordance with Repair Instruction RA 11 65 580, Replacing vacuum unit (wastegate) (N54).

alrighty, thanks for the insight shiv. I do have the Dinan stage 2 flash if that makes a difference. Its barely noticeable unlike the couple videos on youtube where its INSANE and flapping all the time haha.

I don't think you got it.
I made those videos before I got it fixed by the dealer. I came up with a temporary fix for the wastegate rattle, but this fix popped out after spirited driving.

getting actuators replaced
So I brought my car into the BMW dealership to get the wastegates replaced... I came to pick up my car this morning and even after both wastegates were successfully replaced, the noise is STILL THERE. Actually, the rattling is WORSE than when I first brought the car in... I told the SA to take it back and fix the problem, and they are taking a look right now (I'm at the BMW dealership as I type haha).
I had to argue with the tech a little because he was saying that the noise, to a certain extent, is normal... but obviously not as badly as mine is doing right now... Here's a video of the noise BEFORE... and it's WORSE now... [u2b]ViuBG9s3a6w&fmt=18[/u2b] Anyways... good to know that failed wastegates are not harmful for the engine/turbos... but it his hella annoying... hope they fix it soon...

Plus, BMW says the problem with my wastegates is actually a leak from one of the tubes going to the solenoid... so Mr. 5's fix probably wouldn't be applicable in this case anyways...

If you don't feel comfortable with it then that's perfectly fine. Just let the dealer do their job.

If your wastegate truely is leaking? you should hear a hissing i would think... i know for my friends scion tC turbo we put positive pressure on the system to check for boost leaks, which there were some and we hear a "ppssssss" sound. this however is not something as easy as using two wrenches. if you have any specific details reguarding the Mr. 5 fix, please do not feel strange to PM me, Tommorow, i will be at fixxfest but sunday i will be home and ready to answer if need be. Also i doubt Mr. 5 would mind to answer a few specific questions on the fix, but i dont like speaking for others. So yeah, please try the fix before you let BMW update or put new stuff on :P

in your case, i would bring it back to the dealer since they already did the software update and new wastegates and such.
the problem is pretty simple, there either not adjusting to spec accordingly or something else. bring it back until they fix and replace with new parts, with what is needed. your knee deep thus far. GL man. |
