Went drifting today
Did my GPS homework and found some vacant lots around the DC area (no easy task) and wanted to test the car in DSC off for the first time.
I was able to do a couple power slides, let me say it was pretty overwhelming feeling a 3700 pound car tail whip like that. No idea if I did it right, but the thing spun about 180 degrees basically in place, that is to say the forward arc of the vehicle inertia didn't carry outward. It basically slid in place in a circle. I almost hit the lamp post I want to make a smooth arc around, thankfully I was conservative in my attack. I would like to learn to make the car slide but the main directional vector continue to be more forward and less circular. Need more reps.

No question the more a car weighs the more the driver has to stay on top of what it's going to do next. I think our cars' weights are by far their most significant shortcoming.

I swear it was lighter even though it looks like a bigger car. According to google they are 33-3400 pounds, which would be quite a bit lighter with 460+ horsepower. Need to find a parking lot without lamp posts in a grid..hahah

They don't always advertise it, but a lot of that sliding action in stunt cars (and rallye) is from a separate rear brake lever so the rear breaks loose into the slide. You could try using the E-brake, but mine doesn't seem strong enough to break the back end loose (haven't tried it). Getting an X drive to classically drift will be quite difficult, I'd imagine (you could look into those coders that can disable the front drive like they do in the new M5). It will also help to fit the cheapest, narrowest tires you can find on a set of bunk factory rims (or steelies, if those exist in our size/offset). It is not unusual to cord down and dig a wheel rim into pavement, so don't use your nice ones.
But if you want real drifting fun try this: fully detail your car, then park it safely. Now go borrow somebody's plain Jane FWD and stop someplace for a couple of take out trays for the 'tray trick' (or go full bore and buy a couple of industrial cookie trays). Put the rear wheels on the trays, hit the handbrake, and drift to your heart's content (or until you need new trays). When you wrap that car around a lightpole, it will still be cheaper than the repairs to whatever part you are surely going to break on the 2, because it has like 100000 man hours of engineering in it built to avoid doing what you are trying to make it do. And for god's sake post some videos either way. I'm on my 3rd re-watch of the CRASH series. |

Sliding something that heavy like its on ice really opens some perspective on why they spend all that time engineering the stability and traction control systems. But then you think generations and generations lived just fine without it. Carbureted V8s and rear wheel drive was the only choice. To fight the nannies or not fight the nannies, that you paid alotta cash for.

And those motors seldom made more than about 60hp/liter; most of those old cars were lucky to push 300whp, and back then that was considered a sort of 'handling limit' that, beyond this, the only chassis that could use it would be getting into racecar levels and only exploitable on track. Really about half of the progress is due to the tires.

drifting
I thought I read somewhere that when BMW designed the 2 series they wanted the car to be a drifter. My 230i x-drive was a fantastic drifter with the original runflats. Once I got the MPSS not as good but not bad.

I wondered why old "muscle" cars were 3-400 horse and now days it seems like they are doubling that!

Yes, if they didn't have traction control, the lawyers and insurance companies would price them out of reach (all those cars and coffee crash videos attest to what craziness you get if you turn the 'nannies' off and start flooring it). Also helped by the cheap EFI/engine control and tire tech. Really the most impressive thing is the flexibility - getting 100+ hp/liter isn't that hard, but doing it in something that idles nice, doesn't foul plugs every 100 miles, and can start at temps below 50 is what really sets the new era apart.
