Connecting to home WiFi

Does iDrive 7 not connect to other WiFi networks for updates? I was trying to find a way to do this, but all I see in the settings is the ability to enable the hot spot, turning the car into a wifi network.

No because that would have been too simple and straight forward like my Audi. BMW does not do simple and cannot produce a system that doesn't clash with all others and it must become obsolete within a few minutes.

Would it work if I would put a dual client wifi router between the car and my home wifi? So the wifi router would join the car wifi and also my home wifi? Some nat in between to join the networks.

Never mind, the car does not fetch the update right, the phone pushes it to the car?

From what I've been able to intuit from discussions here, there are two types of OTA update delivery mechanisms: a) to phone Connected app then to car from phone, and b) directly to car.

But even if you did manage a multihome router setup (one link to car wifi that is connected to hotspot internet and one link to home wifi that is connected to broadband internet), that a) would not give the car a channel over your broadband to access anything since that network client capability is not programmed as far as we know, and b) car's hotspot shuts down when car shuts down (after semi-random unspecified delay, of course) anyway.
