Sunroof.. anyone have issues?
Getting my M50i soon and I saw couple of threads where sunroof malfunctioned quite often. Anyone that uses sunroof often have any issues? Just wanted to see if I need to watch out for anything.

I hope the 'new' smaller moving sunroof will be quite reliable. I mean they really made it so small, it should not be a big strain, and even if it fails it should be a lot easier to fix.

Well there are quite a few of us who do still have issues, i.e. the roof won't open and you have to reset it. This happens multiple times per week.
My car has been in the dealership twice for it, still no fix. But the good news, no rattles |

it was 24° this morning and no rattles, keep in mind the roads by me are bad to say the least and I'm running 21" wheels with runflats

Pretty frequent issues with opening and closing for me too (2020 45e). Especially does not seem to like being left open overnight with lock / unlock cycle.

Have had to reset the sunroof maybe 4 times in 10 months, so not a real issue for me. I was at the dealership this morning and mentioned it.
They investigated for 30-45 mins and let me know that indeed there was an issue, software-related, and that they will call me when the update is released in march 2021 to fix it. He said "It is a well known, documented issue at BMW, and they are working on it because a lot of X5's have the same issue. We expect a lot of the next big update. Your X5 is still on 11/2019.70, but updating to the current latest version would not solve the issue..." Last edited by Flippy_00; 01-05-2021 at 07:27 AM.. |

Every few days I had to reset the sunroof, not now because it's winter not because BMW solved it. Other software issues: 16-6 Amp charging, black instrument cluster suddenly, no bass when playing music, no cycling through BC, color of interoir light changed suddenly,... I drove 5 years a X6 F16 with zero issues. Now, every week there is one or another software issue. It feels like driving a frigging microsoft car |

I had a fairly major issue on my X5 when it was brand new. Sunroof moved slowly and binded up. Dealer disassembled and lubricated, problem persisted. Dealer then replaced the sunroof motor, problem persisted. Finally resolved after replacing the entire cassette. Major repair for a new car, but the service department did a nice job and BMW credited me for the inconvenience.

It's been at the dealer almost 2 weeks now. They found the moonroof cassette has a crack in it. :-( Have to replace the entire thing. Part not available in the US right now. Being sent via slow boat from Germany I guess...they had to wait for a production number for it too. Expect it to arrive end of Feb. So I guess BMW's quality control isn't anything special.
