X5 M Sport 22 inch wheels- help
I purchased a new 2021 X5 xdrive4.0 with M-sport package, yesterday.
I didn't realize the darn 22inch tires were SUMMER tires. Continental Premium Contact6 tires. 275 35 22 fronts, 315 30 22 rears. I live in MD/DC area and we get some snow/ice, but the temps do get cold in the Jan-March. I had no idea they were summer tires until after I purchased the car, as the sales punk said they were all-seasons. Obviously, reading the tire info on TireRack states no to use them in cold/ice/snow. The only A/S tire available in those sizes are the Pirellis , but they're nearly $500 each!!! Another $2k on top of what I spent is just insane. So, I'm asking.. am I gonna kill myself driving these tires if it ice/snows? what kind of damage am I gonna cause the tires if it's constantly in the teens-30 deg weather ?? Should I purchase new wheels/tires just for the winter? If, so what do you recommend on the inexpensive side ? Thanks. |

Someone from the UK just posted a thread about his X5 slipping around on 22 summer tires in light snow. So yes you should get winter tires, if it gets cold and snow in the area where you live. For budget reasons you could look for a set of used 19 or 20 inch winter wheels. This will be cheaper and better for your rims. My colleague has the pirellis on his '22 and he is happy with them. The pirellis are 310 euro for the rear and 260 euro for the front. So twice as expensive in the US ? Continental and Vredestein also have the correct size, don't know if you can get them in the US. Edit he does have another tire on his 22: 295-30-22 in the back 275-35-22 front. Second season now without problems. His dealership put on these I think he doesn't even knows these are not the original size. |

I got these from Oponeo. 20 inch square set up with general grabber AT3 so you a good to go in the snow, and Mud and off-road and cruise the highway with no noticeable noise difference. I have the same 22 inch for the summer. Total cost in the Uk was £1600 for the wheels and the tyres. Guess about the same in $.Plus you can sell the wheels at the end of your lease for about half.

Probably the least wallet lightening approach is ordering 22" A/S - since those summer performance will provide you approximately 12K-18K miles (less or slightly more depending on driving style) of use. Other approach is buying a 19" or 20" winter wheel set - which you could probably get for $2K-3K.

Anyone with a source for 20inch wheels/tires that I may purchase, that will fit the 2021 X5 M-sport package.
(I've noticed that the M-sport brakes are blue in most of these pictures of seen , mine are plain ole nickle/silver in color, does that mean I just have regular calipers?) |

You'll have to put new tires on your car at some point... just put winters (if you can find them) on your 22's for 4-5 months of the year and summers back on it when it warms up.
Driving on summer tires when the temp drops below the threshold of the compound is like driving on a hockey pucks.. Not advisable and kind of defeats the purpose of having an SUV in the winter.. (Unless you have a second vehicle that's more appropriate to those conditions.) |

Until I figure out this dilemma , I do have my kid's IS250 sitting in the garage. She didn't want it anymore, and bought a 2000 Honda CRV with 140k because she likes the "boxy look"
Don't asking why, she's 24 and still figuring out things I guess |

I to just purchased a 2021 X5 M50i with 22s... Going to get 20 winter wheel/tire setup as well... Given these are offset, anything need to be done when ordering the 20s or getting regular square setup 20's work?

Ended up waiting too long to buy my 22" winter tires (waited until I got my car beginning of October), when I should have just ordered the Pirelli Scorpion winters in September. Lesson learned.
Love the look of the truck with 22" winters. There are a lot of X5s around, and most with 20" winters. I figure, I got the beefier wheels, I want to drive them year round! All it takes is one mistake (that someone else makes) to realize that proper winter tires are a life saver. Get the winters!

Summer tires become dangerous in temps less than 40-45 degrees as the rubber compound doesn't handle well in cold temps. I've found 2 all-season options in the 22's, Pirelli Scorpion Verde and Nitto NT420V. The Nitto are almost half the cost of the Pirelli's.
