Release Date: Available Now!

Description (Cold Air Intake): Being the quintessential performance SUV in the marketplace, the X5M is the perfect canvas to showcase a work of art for the entire enthusiast community to see. Creating an indelible mark upon the vehicle, and in particular the engine bay, the Dinan carbon fiber cold air intake is not just a work of art but a piece worthy of bearing the label of “masterpiece.”

With gloss UV coated carbon fiber stretching from the front of the engine compartment to the rear it’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer volume of carbon. The majority of it comprised of a fully functional secondary air inlet which doubles as an ornate engine cover. As such, signature BMW engine cover design elements signifying the cylinder count are integrated into the design for factory like continuity and a nod to a long history. The cosmetic beauty of the system does not solely derive from the presence of carbon however. The immense central passage also purposefully bisects the engine compartment to ensure the factory bracing, which is impressive on its own, is visible. With both OEM and Dinan elements showcased simultaneously the overall engine bay retains symmetrical harmony and commands attention at all corners.

Beyond outward appearances and upon closer inspection details emerge which showcase the level of care taken in the intake systems design beyond simply aesthetics. For instance, the secondary air source is deriving its contents from an unobtrusive central hood scoop located behind the front grilles that feeds into the newly formed inlet hump at the front of the engine bay. Through constant CFD analysis, the design of the scoop and secondary inlet continually underwent improvements in order to meet the demand of an even and un-agitated air supply to each air box. In its final form, accents in the carbon both provided a visual embellishment as well as created the outward manifestations of the runners used to direct and smooth the secondary air flow. The additional air flow ultimately supplements the factory inlet locations on both the left and right air boxes with ambient air from outside of the engine compartment. These air boxes have been enlarged and equipped with massive filters to handle this increased volume and together with the rest of the system allow the intake to flow as efficiently as possible.

While the stock intake system is adequately suited to support up to stage 1 power levels that does not mean there is no performance benefit when upgrading to the Dinan system. Besides its jaw dropping appearance the biggest advantage of the system, by virtue of additional and optimized flow, is the reduction of the pressure depression in the stock system. This equates to the turbo having to work less in order to achieve targeted power. With the turbo working more efficiently this also means a lower pre-turbine backpressure, lower turbocharger shaft speeds, lower turbocharger compressor discharge temperatures, and for the ability to achieve higher boost pressure levels. Paired with the natural improvement to throttle response, a bump to the acoustics, and an unequalled visual appeal the Dinan F9x X5M/X6M carbon fiber intake system can wear the self-appointed moniker of “masterpiece” without trepidation.

Features/Benefits
  • Carbon Fiber overload – the good kind.
  • Center inlet/scoop doubles as a visually pleasing carbon fiber engine cover.
  • Increased sound for aural satisfaction at full load.
  • Increased turbo efficiency, reliability, and head room.
  • More Flow: 10% greater than stock (Stock: 575 CFM, Dinan: 630 CFM @ 30" H2O per bank).
  • Improved throttle response.
  • 86% increase in inlet cross sectional area via the center inlet/scoop (secondary inlet) for maximum airflow.
  • Larger volume air boxes (56% larger than stock) that completely seals allowing an increased volume of air to be utilized.
  • 46% increase in filter area (stock: 51in˛, Dinan: 82in˛ per side) for optimum flow.
  • Bolt-on installation.

Nice! Interesting design for sure. Would look sick with a M color stripe running down the middle.

I assume from inside the cabin the intake sound change is minimal?

Cabin sound is largely unchanged. Get a little bit more noise internally at full load but I'm not sure its enough to really make a bullet point about or anything. Cabin insulation on all the big cars (and SUVs) has been stout the last couple generations.

Ordering now!
@dinan Do the turbo inlets from the f90 m5 work with this? Or do you plan to offer a variation for f95? Seems they were a big contribution to power gain with that system.

Will this work on a X6 M50i?

Like the M5 CAI released not to long ago, this does not provide any raw horsepower gains as both stock systems flow enough to support even tuned numbers and are efficient enough there are no substantial pressure depressions to correct that would result in meaningful to report increased horsepower. The advantage to the CAI is in optimizing turbo efficiencies and reducing workload. Sure -- on 1000 HP super builds there would undoubtedly be some power advantage with the system but that is not the norm either. For most, the allure is going to be looks, sound, and efficiency.

For pre-2021 vehicles in the not so distant future I am told since we finally got some direction on the emissions side for how to treat E85 stuff. For 2021+ vehicles your guess is as good as mine. Until the newest encryption is bypassed/cracked in a meaningful way proliferation to the market is at a stand still. Its being worked on but putting a timetable on when a breakthrough may occur there is a fools errand.

Do not. Completely different inlets. From gathering pressure/temp/etc data throughout the intake system (inclusive of the inlets) there was not anything substantial (or obvious) in the short turbo inlet track to really improve upon like there was on the M5. So, at present, there are no plans for inlets on the X5M. We may revisit them down the road though if it is decided that we want to take the vehicle further (ie: big turbos) -- but that will be largely dependent on reception/sales of the more traditional bolt ons.

Never been tested but it's unlikely. Just on pictures it appears the factory lower boxes are different between the 2 platforms.

Thanks for the quick reply. Ordered the system today.

What's the ETA for additional bolt ons and tune for pre-2021 builds? I know Dinan has had an exhaust system in the works for some time but what else can we expect downstream? I'm currently using racechip with catted DPs but would like to go a different direction to accommodate the DPs and A/F better. Is there a tune available for testing?

Hardware: ETA's for hard parts in the current supply chain climate are a non-starter. They will be released when they are ready. That is about as specific as you will be able to get out of me. That said, the development side of the core 4 product lines (tune, exhaust, intake, base suspension) for the platform have been completed for awhile. Its just a matter of supply chain/manufacturing being able to produce them. With constantly evolving supplier in hand dates and raw good shortages trying to pin down even a rough ETA is challenging... and rarely accurate. The intake just happened to be the first to fully come together hence it being the first to market of the bunch.

Software: As mentioned earlier -- tune for pre-2021 builds should be released in the not so distant future. We were at an impasse on some emissions legality for awhile but that appears to be largely resolved (or so I am told).

Website does not allow international shipping. That's a battle I have been fighting for a LONG time but we have had copious amounts of fraud issues in the past with international web orders so that's the basis there. One day...

Regardless, you can order direct via phone at 1-800-341-5480 if you like or order through any number of etailers that carry the product line and offer international shipping (may take a few days for those to load onto their webste though). Other options are ordering through a few of the forum vendors here or contacting and ordering through your local Dinan dealer in your market. Chances are you have at least one in your area for the vast majority of the major cities of Canada.

That's unfortunate to hear, Canada should be exempt from the restriction since all us Canadian's are as honest as 7-11 home made apple pie.

I agree fully. Been beating a drum on that hill for seemingly years. If you can't trust a canuck or an upper midwesterner (basically the same thing) who can you trust? =)

Same as above (phone order, order through forum vendor, order through online international shipping etailer, order through local dealer/importer) but the importer option is different obviously. German Performance Garage out of Sydney is the importer for southeast Australia so ultimately all of the shops around there go through them.
