Wind noise from driver window/door

I recently started getting a loud wind or whistle noise from the driver side window or door (couldn't pinpoint yet) anytime the heating is turned on and driving over 30km/h. It seems to go away significantly when I turn off the heating while driving.
Anyone ever experience this?

Thanks!

Mine has developed the same. Sound is coming from the top of the door or maybe the sunroof. Seams to worse when the weather is cold.

Yes exactly. I just started noticing it about a month ago since it has gotten colder. I can't tell if it's from the door or sunroof as well although most of the time I am convinced it's from the door area.
I found an SIB on google somewhere pointing to the trim on both sides of the windshield;

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...75279-9999.pdf

I checked them out, they seem a bit loose at the top but not detached as per the photo here.

It has honestly become so prominent that I am constantly hearing it even with the music on and still debating whether to take it in or try to get used to it.

I am hearing an annoying ticking noise in the same area since the weather turned cold.

Mine started doing the same recently. I swear it wasn't doing it when I got it.

Anyway, the seal for the sunroof didn't look like it went all the way across. New X5's on the lot weren't the same, so they replaced it. Fixed the issue.

Thank you so much for this!

You are right! I was always wondering why that seal running across the tilting part of the sunroof had a gap on the driver's side, every time I wash the car. This morning I closed the gap with a piece of tape and the noise went away. This confirms that the wind noise is coming from there. I'll mention this at my next service.

So for anyone suffering from wind noise appearing to come from the driver side window or door, check that seal for any gaps first.

Just look at mine and I have the same gap on the drivers side. Will try and tape over it and see what happens.

I wonder if the seal is easy to replace?

I can't really orient myself to your car from that picture, is the encircled part over the driver seat? where did you put the tape? on the outside or the inside? can you take a picture of that part please?

Sorry it was kind of dark. Its the corner exactly over the driver's head.

Here's a better picture to give you a better idea. The tape is just temporary to test it out and since this morning the noise is gone.

thanks, that's a lot better, I'll definitely try it out and if it works, i'm gonna tell the dealer to fix it. I've basically lived with that little hiss for the past two years.

It's strange, the gap's been there since I got the car, but I've been hearing this noise for the past couple months only.
Let me know if it works out for you as well.

Happy holidays!

I tilted open the sunroof and this rubber seal is easily moved from side to side when you grab it. It seems to be a defect along with the fact that it isn't long enough to cover both ends at the same time.

Has anybody had this seal replaced. Mine is short as per the photographs above. It is definitely causing a whistling noise in the cabin as when it is taped over the noise goes.

The seal moved left and right easily but can’t work out how to replace it. Definitely going to highlight it at the next service due at the end of the month

I moved it towards the driver's side and that seemed to have significantly reduced wind noise. I will also have the dealer address it at the next service appointment.

Mine was replaced by BMW and it took care of the noise.

Sorry for the late reply!

I had the same issue and thought I'd share details/resolution, which was similar to the others above.

I'd noticed wind noise a couple of times last Winter (Winter of '20/'21) when it was really cold, but when things warmed up, it went away and I never noticed it again until it got cold gain this Winter, back in November.

Also, as maczrool mentioned, I too heard the ticking sound when it was cold. I could never put my finger on it, but I always thought it sounded like leather on leather rubbing or movement where it would "stick" a bit...I never equated it to the sunroof.

After reading this thread I took a closer look and found the same gap others had noted. (See pic below) Similar to others, I could easily slide the seal when the sliding roof was in the "up" position. When I first found it, the gap was on the driver's side. So, I slid the seal to put the gap on the passenger side and sure enough, the wind noise "moved" to be much more prominent above the passengers head.

I brought the issue to the attention of my SA when I had it in for an engine coolant issue and my dealer quickly found and additional SIB that had been posted just last November: SIB 54 04 21. (Note: This SIB is different than the one posted earlier in this thread.)

Effectively, the SIB simply indicates to install a new seal (Part #: 54-10-7-493-155) and then use a bit of Loctite on each end to keep the seal in place.

This completely eliminated the wind noise I was hearing, as the cabin is much quieter now! It also completely eliminated the ticking noise I would hear when it was really cold out.

I wish I would have had it dealt with a couple of months ago, because it's amazing how big of difference it made. (You get used to wind noise over time...)

Is every dealership going to take that SIB u posted and honor it when we show it to them? I have had this issue since last summer (weren't a thing when I pick them up). I also have that gap too as well. Trying to get them replace it before my warranty ends (Coming May).

Hard to say emphatically "yes", but I think any SA with a bit of experience (or Service Manager) would. I have a great relationship with my SA and the service team, and they know I hang out in places like Bimmerpost, so that likely helps.

Effectively, the SIB gives the service department a pre-approved or "no hassle" piece of warranty work, which they tend to not want to turn down…

With some SIBs, it can be a bit challenging to demonstrate they apply, but with this one being a seal gap that is easily visible and a customer complaining of wind noise, it should be a "no brainer" for most.

I just had this fixed for my MY22. Note that the SIB mentioned in this thread is only covering Aug '17 - Dec '20 vehicles. I had to have some back and forth with the SA because he initially told me this wouldn't apply to my vehicle. But once he saw the vehicle himself and we compared it to another X5 on the lot, things moved on fast. I wonder if there is an another SIB with updated dates out there.
