One thing I noticed on yours is that you have multiple map regions. I only have one. ID, MT, OR, WA, WY, 2021-3 You might want to go to the connected drive, login and then select "My Garage\View Vehicle Profile\Settings\Automatic Map Update\Edit" select just your region and then "Save". I have no clue what the "New initialization required." crap means. Typical Alien BMW terminology. ![]() |

I have this on my 2019 as well, with map version 2018-4. Connected Drive support investigated and determined my X5 isn't updating and, indeed, this appears to be the original map version and the vehicle has never updated.
CD support advised to take it to the dealer who would open a TSARA case to obtain support to further diagnosis. That was done with the dealer updating the iDrive software. Made no difference. Returned the car so they could manually update the map software. Several attempts at doing so with several different USB drives all failed part way through the update. They then connected their computer to upgrade via cable, but their system said the software could not be updated. That was 6 days ago. Waiting for notification they've found the solution then return for the map update. |

The OTA updates only your selected region, but if you were in another region, the old data stays. They do this to limit the amount of data they need to push to each vehicle. There isn't an easy way to get the whole country's data. I'd like to have a manual way to achieve that. I went out of my area for about a week, and while I didn't change my home region, it didn't update the region I was in. It may have if I changed my home, but one would think it could be smart enough to recognize you've been outside of that region for days and then decide to update that region as well.
On older systems, it wouldn't update the map data while driving...it only did it upon reinitialization that occurs when you restart iDrive, which can be as simple as turning things off then on again, or you can force it. Not sure if that's what they're talking about, though. It's been a while, but there may be a check box you can click if you scroll down to tell it it's okay to update now. A few of us hashed through this topic back in November: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1875292.
No real conclusion...For me, it went away after a manual, full NA map update was done on my X6 by my dealer, as I hadn't been receiving the quarterly OTA updates. However, I did receive the 2021-4 update after that...but the "requires initialization" language went away after they did the full map update.

The updates generally, only include a new database, the actual executable doesn't change. But, it may be that if the executable gets updated, it needs a different procedure once the data is there. I've not seen it, nor heard about it on mine.

Has anyone got map updates for the area including the New England states? I got my car back in May so I would have thought that if there are quarterly updates I should have received at least one by now... FWIW I did get the idrive software update OTA.

The frustrating thing for me is I live 18 miles from St. Louis, MO in Illinois. Missouri isn’t part of the region Illinois is in, I do about 25% OF MY DRIVING ON THE “other side of the river” and would like to have both Illinois and Missouri up to date. After that rant, I really don’t notice anything missing or wrong when I drive in Missouri.

While the roads don't change all that much, in a typical year, there are probably a million points of interest that can change as businesses open/close/move, so that is an issue. When updating maps before they did OTA stuff, you'd get the whole country, and in the USA, that included Canada (not sure about Mexico).
FWIW, just driving in a region not your home does NOT initiate an update, at least from my experience where the X5 was outside my region for over a week. It might have if I went online and changed my home region, but I didn't. |

Also, when I'm home my stupid clock refuses to acknowledge that I'm in the mountain time zone. That one's been frustrating the heck out of me. |

I think there's a setting to enable/disable automatic clock setting...if set to automatic, it (should) switch between standard local time and daylight time, but may or may not detect time zone crossing.

I had the same issue when my maps updated in the Northeast US…and I share(d) your collective frustration. I did try a hard reset, yet the issue persisted. Once I drove the rig for about 20 mins it resolved. Don’t think it’s anything other than an eventual server handshake for which you have to wait…

If I remember correctly, I actually did go to the ConnectedDrive website, where I re-selected and saved my region (under Automatic Map Updates). I’d try that and see if it resolves the hung initialization.

I did it by just reselecting the same region. Now two days past, "new initialization" still appears.
