It's been rumored for awhile that there was a replacement for the S63 in the works. The codename is S68. Twin turbo V8 hybrid setup, but it was supposed to be closer to 700-750 horsepower. Guess time will tell!

Interested to see what engine they are utilizing and other specs.....I cannot imagine a twin turbo V8 hybrid putting out only ~600 hp. Confused here....

It is a mild hybrid, like practically all new BMWs with an ICE are a mild hybrid. Not a PHEV. The 700hp+ figures mentioned apply to the PHEV setup in the XM.

This could be a good thing depending on how you look at it.
If the current M cars get a 100-150hp bump from their current versions without aggressive tuning or race gas, they'll be no need to further modify engines and risk reliability. |

So with the Comp no longer being a package.....would I assume the X5M base would be the same price as it's been....whereas the X5M Comp's price will increase by $9k?
Not sure what they did with pricing of other models they did this to? Obviously I doubt they will start selling the X5M Comp for the same price as the base now.

So what have they done with pricing of other models where they got rid of the base? Did they raise the price of the car or are you basically getting a Comp for base pricing?

Just checking that this is 592bhp/600ps/441kw?
If so this is a reasonable bit less than the 617bhp/625ps/460kw current engine.

It will weigh more(all the 48 volt mild hybrid hardware) and have 17 hp less. This is a mild hybrid which was necessitated by euro emission laws and helps with start stop fuel efficiency so don't expect a performance boost from this. Will be interesting to see how this performs vs current gen.

We don't know how much kick the electric side will add to that. I would expect enough to make it go as quickly or quicker than the current Comp.

Why? BMW have been providing mild hybrid setups for years now.

The value of the gasoline version will stay strong as a pre-owned. Most are not ready for the Hybrid set up. I for one am not. Nothing better then the sound of the engine, it makes the drive experience way more fun.

There are really 3 levels of hybridization: 1) Mild Hybrids: 48V systems. Mostly just improve start-stop functionality. Minimal to no performance benefit, small efficiency benefit (<5%). 2) Hybrids: Meaningful performance (~90hp in the new Tundra), big fuel economy benefits (20 - 40%), minimal weight gain or cost (battery is usually <2kWh), don't plug in 3) PHEV: Big performance and efficiency gain, but very expensive and heavy, must plug-in religiously to see benefit I wish more OEMs used hybrids. They offer much of the benefits without the negatives (weight, cost, plugging in) and allow OEMs to hit their emissions requirements without going so heavy into EV/PHEV. Rant over. |
