Description: The argument as to what performance SUV is placed atop the performance pyramid always seems to come to an end when the BMW X5M (or X6M) enters the conversation. The burly vehicles are intimidating due to their size yet still remarkably agile and quick given their heft making them perennial kings of the category. Like their sedan sibling, the M5, however there is a bit missing when it comes to audible enjoyment. While in stock trim the exhaust note is respectable, it is held back from unleashing its true glory in the name of refinement and respectability. Dinan brings forth an exhaust upgrade that retains both these important characteristics but also allows the full chorus of all 8 cylinders to surge through the system and display their vocal talents. With Dinan the beast has found its bark… and it is glorious.

To achieve desired sound volume and tone Dinan felt becoming of the F9x X5M/X6M the tubing was enlarged to 83mm (vs 80mm stock) to allow freer flow throughout the entirety of the system. The larger tubing is fed into a muffler that is typical of all Dinan exhaust design and utilizes absorption and reactive technologies designed to improve exhaust flow and reduce backpressure. The combination results in increased power output and a great sporty sound that is civilized when you want it to be, and pleasantly aggressive under hard acceleration. This is partly courtesy of the retained computer-controlled exhaust valves that limit noise during low-speed driving and open fully during high-load conditions to allow free flow and greater sound as the bulk of the gases are bypassing the muffler. Like all Dinan exhausts, our X5M/X6M free flow exhaust is engineered to reduce low-RPM drone so the cabin of the vehicle is still intimate and not drowned in an excessively loud tone. With the Dinan exhaust equipped on the X5M/X6M you get the best of both worlds; aggressive tone/sound and civility. A combination that is quintessential of the luxury SUV with a penchant for aggressive behavior.

Sound isn't the only aspect of the exhaust that has been modified. The Dinan F9x X5M/X6M exhaust has been skillfully crafted entirely out of T304 stainless steel and TIG welded for the best visual appearance and color. The entire system is then brush finished to further guarantee an immaculate looking system out of the box. The attention to detail is not limited to parts of the system you can't see once the exhaust is installed but is also extended to the exhaust tips themselves. The Dinan exhaust sports massive, quad 4.5" (114mm) clamp-on, double-walled, black ceramic coated (or polished) and laser engraved exhaust tips that are befitting of the big Bavarian beast. The tips masterfully fill up and accentuate upon the factory cut-outs showcasing an extremely aggressive, yet refined, styling that will force people to take notice even before it is heard.

Features/Benefits:
  • Maximum gains of +6 HP and +5 ft-lb of torque
  • Enjoyably louder, sportier sound
  • Drone abatement technologies used to reduce cabin resonance
  • Four, diffuser filling, 4.5" (114mm) double-walled, polished, or black ceramic coated clamp-on tips with laser engraved Dinan logo
  • Larger diameter piping for increased flow (83mm vs. 80mm)
  • Stock exhaust valve actuators reused, and operation of exhaust valve is unchanged so exhaust tone can be adjusted via the M-drive settings
  • Computer controlled exhaust valves are retained and limit noise during low-speed driving and open fully during high-load conditions
  • Twin secondary exhaust valves are a whopping 76mm diameter, making them 30% less restrictive than the OE valves
  • 100% 304 Stainless Steel construction
  • Factory-like fitment with included mounting hardware

The price point is very attractive considering the other options currently out.

Any idea when the x pipe will be available?

Im curious how much room is there to adjust the tips once the system is installed? Looks like the adjustment will be on top of the tips.

Who is going to be the first to install this system with the secondary downpipes deleted? Im curious to hear what it sounds like

X-pipe will be out before the end of the year as the safe estimate. Optimistic it will be much sooner but optimism is in short supply when it comes to supply chain. Would have loved to have waited to release together but there have been a few delays and it just wasn't realistic to delay any further. However the video/sound clip really needed to have both represented so an informed decision could be made so you got a sneak peak. =)

Tip adjustability is around 2" of front/back play on the inner tips. Much more on the outer tips. But yes, given the way BMW has started to have that very aggressive cut back on the valance it exposes more of the tip so we have been using the "hideaway tip" much more frequently. This allows the clamp to be hidden and not sacrifice tip length to accomodate.

Indeed. Between the X5M, M3, M240i, Supra and a few others the collection of recently released or upcoming exhausts on site is about as eargasmic as it has ever been.

No drone.

Video gives you a pretty good taste of what to expect but you will get some gurgles and grunts but no pops and bangs like you often get on the 6 cylinder applications.

Im curious how it would down with secondary cats gone and x pipe

Dinan_Engineering im assuming you have to adjust the "hideaway tips" before installing the system on the car?

doesn't look like there's much room to get tools in there after the exhaust is already on the car

Will there be a way to get blacked out tips with no Dinan on them or at least have the Dinan in a gloss black to be more stealth?

Tips can be adjusted on the car from the underneath/backside. Its not a huge amount of room but can be adjusted with basic hand tools nevertheless.

There is not. Tips are pre-made / sourced complete. I have known some folks to just turn them around to have the logo on the bottom but that is problematic on this tip style because then the clamp bolt would be located on the underside and much more visible. Alternative would just be to purchase alternative aftermarket generic tips of your liking.

I'm interested in the X pipe for sure. The current exhaust isn't bad at all, just muted. A good X pipe would open it up a decent amount.

Am I correct in saying the axle-back with x-pipe is a bolt on swap (no cutting)?

Correct. The combination of both will allow the entire factory exhaust to be dropped and replaced without any cutting.

Akrapovic is $12k in Oz. Will be looking seriously at this one before my car lands in the new year.

Directly, no. With enough modifications and desire though nearly anything is possible.

Just from a quick look at some basic tech drawings --- pipe routing is slightly different and the pipe sizes are also different between the 2 models. Can't tell for certain without having one in front of me but I am going to assume the tip locations/spacing are in the same spot between the models. Even if that is the case however the M50i would need to retrofit the bumper/valance to the X5M or do some trimming at bare minimum to accomodate the tips. That's just the quick obvious things...
