New 45e - unusual smell in cabin - I think it's an exhaust leak
OMG, you would think I'd get an error-free replacement for my 2021 45e lemon.
But I'm not so lucky I've had this weird smell that arises when I brake that permeates inside the cabin. If I can best describe it, it smells like natural gas, and I think it's the exhaust. The smell appears almost always when I brake at a light or stop sign which makes me think it is a trailing exhaust plume that then envelopes the cabin. I just got the car on Thurs night (most have followed my Odyssey) and noticed it right away. .. noticed it pulling out of the lot. I really don't think it's imaginary, and I waited 2 full days to post this thread. I kind of figured it was a new part out-gassing or something like that and it would go away. I will bring it in next week for some paperwork I'm expecting anwyay but I wanted some input on what to tell the CA and service department on what to look for. I'll drive the CA around in the car next week and see if he can smell it too. thanks Last edited by leightos; 12-17-2022 at 08:56 AM.. |

This smell was there when I drove it home. I've yet to wash it and will detail it, will do ceramic coating and tinting on Monday. |

yeah, I thought of that - been trying to get the smell to appear in electric mode. My initial thought is 'no' I don't get it in electric mode. I'm still doing driving tests though. problem is that I try to run the engine and 'gas the accelerator' in sport mode, but there are so many restrictions, and you can't 'gun it' in park while in sport mode like a traditional ICE vehicle.

Maybe let’s not go too far. Cat is not an maintenance item, they last the life of the car. Hardly ever if never, I have heard cars has wore out cat alone, usually something else fails catastrophic to cause cat issue.

thanks... ordered a CO detector for vehicles - we'll see if it's CO at least I'll know, that way it's probably an exhaust leak.

I would think you could narrow it down quickly by driving around in electric mode. If you don't smell it, it must be something related to the exhaust or other ICE components.

Same here on my new 45E. I think it's the undercoating burn off as I used cosmoline on another car & got a bit on the exhaust system. It took about 5k miles before it stopped smelling.

Got something similar, but going on 6 weeks intermittent driving. We’ve alternated between thinking it may be an odd electrical odor or bird poop (which we had on our driveway). Usually only smelt after or as we pull into the garage. Occasionally after stopping at a light or pulling into a parking lot. Seems to be waning though.

yeah I bought the CO monitor and nothing. And I feel I get the smell more in Hybrid coming off the freeway up to a stop sign on exit. I'm not sure I smell it too much in electric, but get it too in sport mode. But after driving 300 miles I swear it seems I get mostly in hybrid.
