I use mine whenever situation presents itself. So far it has been doing a great job. But when it is doing it’s own thing, my foot is ready to brake and my eyes are in mirror and 360’cam. Cannot say I fully trust it yet.

LOL, yep. Whoa! That's the feeling! Especially on a relatively tight-radius curve on the highway.

reverse assistant is fantastic for tight garage. the parallel parking thing works well enough, but I wish it could read lines. I believe its logic tells it to park equidistant from car in front and back which sometimes puts you somewhere wonky in the spot. it is helpful and worth going through the pain of getting good at it - I definitely had some situations with people honking at me while I figured it out.

Driving on the autobahn is a whole other experience. No one cruises in the left lane. The aggressiveness of it moving you over after passing someone is exactly how they drive over there. You check your mirror, no one is there in the left lane, and you're clear to pass the person in front of you. However, as soon as you pass them, and I mean immediately afterwards you scoot back over to the right lane. Why? Because in the blink of an eye someone is on your ass doing 130-140mph. I personally experienced this first hand where someone in an RV from the Netherlands wasn't paying attention to the road as I was passing them. I saw then up ahead, moved over to the left lane continuing my speed of about 130mph, and right as the front of my 300 SRT8 was at his driver's door he scooted over pushing me into the guardrail and pinned me there. I was literally standing on my brakes trying to stop. Surprisingly, it didn't total my SRT8. Did about $14k in damage and was in the shop for 2 months, but wasn't totaled. Guy said he didn't see anyone in the left lane when he went to move over, and Polizei found them 100% at fault. Think they were only going about 70-80mph. So, your observation makes me believe they have Lane Change Assist programmed for their German roads thinking Americans move over immediately after passing, but in reality drivers tend to just camp in the left lane after passing. |

LOL great question. I have never used either the back out or auto park feature and honestly I don't even know how to engage the backout feature. I engage the parking feature quite often just to turn on the front cameras, but have never even thought to let it park. My assumption based on videos I have seen is that the space has to be quite large before the robot will try to park in it so why bother?

So I tried the backup assist out of a parking space and it literally took off very quickly and I stomped on the brake pedal just before it hit the car on the other side of the aisle. Very scarry.
Not wanting to give up, I tried it this morning out of my garage. Using the backup assist. It showed something like 164ft, slowly backing from the garage, then increased the reverse speed quickly, again I stomped on the brake pedal. I'm not sure if I'm just startled by it, or somethings not working properly. |

Used a couple of times to see how it works but it is much easier to do it myself. I guess I am old school now.

Back up assist was designed to be used with the driver modulating the speed by applying pressure to the brake as needed. |

The entire package is one of the best and worst features of the car.
Good: - backup assist, I use it sparingly. It's critical for parking garages in big cities where spaces are tight - automatic cameras, the front camera is very useful. The most useful is when it flips from front facing view to top view automatically. The sensor is perfect for my parking spot at home. I use this daily. - rear cross traffic view camera and sensor, is a critical feature for me. I back out into a busy street, at times with car parked in the curb blocking my view of the the street. I use this daily. Bad: - low light and general camera resolution is absolutely trash. The older cameras in the E70 was better in all lighting conditions. I've played with contrast numerous times. This makes parking at night particularly challenging. Often you're reliant on other lighting sources to improve the resolution - curb view is a great idea, but bad experience. The poor resolution doesn't help and the camera doesn't give confidence of precision due to the poor relative spacing of the boarder area from the CGI image of the wheel and the curb. The only reason I use this feature is for parallel parking, and I tend to use the general surround view instead. When I do use it, I tend to end up too far from the curb. - sensors and views tend to be too conservative. I prefer a very precisely tuned sensor and view. Often times I end up parking too far from the curb or misaligned in the parking spot. - parking spot detection and automated parking - never used it. My only gripe is that I cannot turn the detection off permanently Last edited by Flying Ace; 12-21-2022 at 10:48 AM.. |

If you drive past parking spot #1, the car beeps to indicate it found a parking spot. If you keep driving past a few more cars and get next to / somewhat past parking spot #2 and then activate autopark, the autopark is going to reverse all the way back up the road and park into spot #1. You need to drive fully past spot #2, it'll beep again to indicate it found the second spot and then you can autopark into it. |

I’ve tried to use parking assist in a parking lot a few more times and backing assist out of the garage.
The parking spot assist, I’m finding is really just a waste of time for me, might be useful if you have difficulty getting into a parking spot at the mall. I can do it in at least 1/3 the time the assist takes. Also, it misses most open parking spots when driving through the parking lot. The backing assist, also, don’t see it as useful. If I have to keep brake checking the car so it doesn’t blast out of the garage and onto the lawn or across the street, what’s the use? Yes, I have tire tracks on my lawn, as I guess it doesn’t recognize the difference between pavement and my lawn. So I’ll pass on using them. Also, I won’t check the box for these when ordering a new bmw. IMO, not ready for prime time. Or maybe I just have a buggy system or bad sensors/cameras… Glad for those who find it useful! |
