Latest news on 1-series coming to North America

Looks like I'm one of the first posters in the 1 series forum :w00t:

Anyways I haven't been following automotive news but what's the latest news on if the 1 series E81 will come to the US? They really should bring this car over, the new 3 series is getting too big for my taste and I want a small nimble bimmer. Hopefully they bring it over as a coupe :iono:

Aren't 1-series cars already sold in Mexico? Can't we just make these cars US compliant and drive them right across the border?

Theres a rumor that its coming to canda.. Im telling you now, if that happens, I'm going over there and getting a 130i over here. Hopefully it won't cost to much to get it approved for use in the states, I've heard its possible to get a car over here for very limited use approved by the gov't.. question is cost.

This could be some good news...quoted from an MSNBC article:

"The growth of the small car segment could lure big European car manufacturers, like France’s Renault and Peugeot, into the U.S. market. Tom Purves, CEO of BMW, has reportedly said the compact BMW 1 series will be coming to the United States. BMW already sells the popular Mini Cooper in the U.S."

This does look promising. The only thing is, I have also seen quotes saying that we will not get it for another 2+ years

The February 2006 issue of Roundel (page 22) reports that when BMW NA CEO, Tom Pervine, was "asked if there's 'any more word' on the 1 Series coming stateside, he said, 'Not more word-it is absolutely coming'."
Sweetness!

Damn that sux Why not get a beater car while you wait for it, or get something cheap that you won't take too big of a depreciation hit on when you trade it in for the 1er!

I was thinking of the beater idea actually, I guess I would just have to find a reliable car for a couple hundred bucks .

Yea if you can stand driving around in a beater for 1-2 years, you'll be rewarded handsomely with the 1er! By then you'll have saved up enough to be able to march down to your dealer the very first day they're taking deposits and eventually you'll be one of the first to take delivery.

I sure hope that is the way it goes down, otherwise I will be purchasing whatever Mustang SE comes out by then or maybe a GTI/S3 (if it comes). But I really do not want those. I want the small RWD BMW that I have been thinking of for some three years now

I really don't see, why BMW doesn't launch the 1 series on the US market...Could become a great success for them...
