Wheel / tire size question

I have been trying to figure out how to get this car to ride a bit more smoothly.

Realized I bought the car with the 23" wheels on there. I ordered another set of wheels that will be 23" too but wanted to know how big of a tire can we throw on there? I figured if we could put a bigger tire... then that should smoothen out the ride a bit.

It's that or I go to a 22" set up and go with a bigger tire with that?

Typically the oem set up would be the max tires - otherwise it rides different, mpg changes etc… if you are after a smoother ride, downsize the rim to make room for more rubber on the tire.

No different than a winter setup.

Others will have better intel, but thats what I always thought was the case for BMW.

I have had my XM for 5weeks now, i have the 22inch rims. Testdrove a XM with 23inch rims and I have to say that it makes a world of difference. So if you can live with 22 inch I would definitely go with that.

I ended up going with 23's. I haven't received my wheels yet but the recommendation has been to move away from the runflats (which have an extremely stiff sidewall). Not sure what options we have though at 23".

Just a quick observation, there’s no runflat on the XM in 23’’. I’m looking for alternatives but having a hard time finding some

Front:
Yokohama Advan Sport V107E
275/35 R 23 108Y XL

Pirelli P Zero PZ4 *. (OEM)
HL275/35R23 108Y XL

But they seem to last even less than the Pirelli (240 vs 280 treadwear) and I’m not sure if they do exist. It might be a typo. Would going to 285 be feasible?

Rear:
Yokohama Advan Sport V107E
315/30 R 23 111Y XL

Pirelli P Zero PZ4 *. (OEM)
HL315/30R23 111Y XL

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S K1
315/30 ZR 23 108Y XL

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV
315/30 R 23 111Y XL

Bridgestone Potenza Sport (runflat or not available)
315/30 R 23 108Y XL

Alright. Since no one has done it, I figured I would bite the bullet.

I ordered a set of Vossen wheels which will be installed tomorrow. Decided to change the tires too because honestly.... the ride sucks. The P zeroes the car comes with, due to it being a run flat tire, makes the car ride really bad. It literally wakes my baby daughter up when I'm driving her cause it translates every bump in the road directly into the cabin.

Anyways...I ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s in the following sizes:
285/40/23 - Front
325/35/23 - Rear

These tires are about 1.5" taller than the stock ones and since they aren't run flats, should ride a lot smoother. Wheels are being installed tomorrow so I shall report back my findings then. Until then... anyone know if our cars come with wheel locks? And if so, where the hell is the wheel lock key?

Picked up the car today from the shop.

The fitment was a bit too close for comfort BUT we did it.

It looks like it rubs but it doesn't. There is literally a mm of space in there (had to run a paper through just to confirm). Weird thing is that doesn't rub at all? I have been driving it around all day, going over dips / bumps / driveways ...etc... trying to get it to rub and it doesn't. Weird right?

Car looks a lot better with the wheels and definitely rides a lot better. It's noticeably smoother.

Are the 23’s that come on the vehicle actually run flats? I’m out of town so can’t look but on the configurator, it says they are not:

I didn’t think so. I had the same tires on my XB7 and they weren’t run flats either

Yea, so far I haven’t seen any M cars equipped with run-flats.
Those RFT sucks. Heavy, stiff sidewall, and expensive.

Yeah I was probably wrong. Oh well. Not sure if it's psychological or what but the car does feel better now. Definitely looks a lot better IMO.

He's correct its 5x120 and 66
So the x7 x5 and other wheels are not compatible with XM

I believe this was done so that customers don't interchange wheels from other platforms. Because I think the x7 and xm run the same tire profile.

I have had the XM now for about 7 months and originally my thought was that going 23” would be slightly a downgrade on performance as that would weight more then the 22” rated for max performance.

Bad news so far is that the stock 22” tires are already worn out under normal daily driving… my wife drives it…

Not sure on smoothness of drive but I can say it’s hell of fun on full m mode and I also daily an m6 comp so smoothness in my mind is less of an issue as you tend to feel the road when in m mode vs comfort mode…
