Piano black

I am ordering my new BMWX 550 E and I wished to put piano black as the interior, but the sales team are telling me that it is taking a long time to get the piano black fitted in production, so he recommends that I go for carbon fibre. 10 weeks delay. Should I wait.

Not sure how anyone but you can decide this. What I can tell you is I have piano black in another car and the sheer amount of dust that I see on it, drives me nutz! I carry an eye glass cloth in that car and am constantly wiping it but seconds later, the dust starts to accumulate. When its clean for that couple of seconds, its beautiful but the is no way on planet earth it stays clean. If you don't like carbon fiber, choose a different one.

I have not heard that is causing delays.

Depends on how important the trim is to you. I would not wait but that's me. Both are good options but only you can answer if 10 weeks is worth waiting for PB.

I added Piano Black trim to my build, and it hasn't seemed to delay anything... I placed my order end of June and am scheduled for production on Aug 4th on an m60i build, for reference. Not sure if certain trims receive a priority... Also, I believe dealers need to have the availability to order individual trims.

I mainly decided to go for piano black as we didn't really care for the other standard trims and CF trim just feels out of place, IMO, in a 5000lb+ SUV. It's a luxury SUV first with a healthy dash of performance added in. If you want the piano black just go for it. That being said, we would have gotten CF if the piano black wasn't available.

Seem like the OP has their mind set on Piano Black...
If it was to cause me to be annoyed everytime I got in the car and did not have the interior trim I wanted, I would wait

Personally, the micro scratches on Piano Black would drive me nuts though. Beautiful but it's just like a Jet Black Car....

I second this. After having a few cars with various level of piano black, one of my life missions is to own cars with no or minimal PN

Piano black still looks good on my 3 year old Cayenne. It does collect dust and fingerprints but I keep a microfiber cloth handy. I like the look but don’t know that I’d wait for it. I sped’d carbon fiber on my M60i. Is it available to you? I’ve seen the fineline black in real life and it’s not bad.

1700 miles in and we remain pretty happy with the Fineline Black in our 50e, FWIW. Contrasts nicely with the Silverstone seats. For us carbon fiber just felt like it would be for a car with greater sporting intentions than our 50e. But all of this is 100% personal. So just passing along our Fineline Black experience, in case it’s helpful.

I think our ideal would have been a less glossy (open pore type) Fineline Black. But no such thing exists as an option today.

If you have any level of OCD seriously run don’t walk from piano black. It could take years off your life. Buyer be warned!

Hey Marty,

I am currently in the market for 2024 X5 4.0I M sports package and M sports plus package. I am planning to get either mineral white or Gravid grey color. Can you suggest me if any dealers in NY that can get me around 10% off or so from MSRP?

Those are basically impossible to get, try going for one without the period and it should be a lot easier.

We have seen very few 10% discounts but have seen 8% quite often. Shop your build around to various NY/NJ dealers and see how it goes. You can also use a broker which will save you time and likely money also.

Right, what Turtleboy said. I'm way upstate NY and don't know any dealers in your area (NY/NJ). The last time I inquired at my local dealer, they were charging above MSRP!

I do have Piano Black in my 7-series and am absolutely happy with it and also ordered it with my X5 including individual paint. No special delays my car will arrive around 2-4 weeks later than comparable orders without individual paint (and some without the piano black) on the German forum. Sometimes the individual paint will delay it more than those 2-4 weeks but I've never heard of piano black trim delaying a build.

If you really have your heart set on the piano black finish and none of the other options do it for you, then I would wait. The last thing you would want is having a vehicle only to not check off all the boxes on your wish list, where you could've waited and had it all.

I had the Piano Black trim on my prior X5. Didn't select it, it was an in-stock unit. When clean, it looked fine, but it was only clean for about 5 minutes, then dust and fingerprints/smudges started accumulating. In terms of scratching, however, mine held up well (and I didn't baby it). In any case, when it came time to order my LCI, I went with CF this time. I wish I'd just gone with one of the matte finish wood trims. The CF is just as shiny/glossy as piano black. So, if it's a choice between the two and you like the look of PB better, go with it as the CF has many of the same downsides.

personally I’m done with all glossy trims. I’ve done black and carbon fiber, so as long as matte options are available, I will look at those first.

that being said, go with what you absolutely want even if it means a delay. don’t let anyone push you to settle on something on their time. only you know if 10 weeks is too long for you

Color and trim are options that have a very “personal preference” attached to them. I would rarely say anyone’s choices are good or bad. That’s what they decided on and were looking forward to in their build. Just as a possible alternate option though, I might suggest the black fineline wood trim. I just took delivery of a 50e for my wife yesterday - Mineral White, Cognac with fineline black wood trim. The Cognac goes very well with this shade, others have mentioned the same on various seat colors. It’s actually very black and glossy, much like piano black. The fineline wood is not as pronounced as in other BMW wood trims. I’d go so far as to say that there is noticeably more black than wood. For me this was nice, I feel it gives a texture to the trim without just being glossy black. Again, this is a personal preference. If you at all were considering an alternate trim choice, this would be a close second to piano black. I would definitely recommend seeing it in person at your dealer on another car before taking the leap though. There’s no bad choice here. Best of luck on your order.

What color is your interior otherwise? I have carbon fibre with black leather seats and absolutely love it.

I am not in a hurry to order one but I would never pay over MSRP. Maybe wait a few months until fall or late fall just in time for Christmas would be great to get one with like 8% off from MSRP. Maybe the ridiculous 5% financing would be a little better too.

I keep invisible glass and a plush microfiber towel in my door. almost always spray center down and gently wipe dust away. a bit annoying but it looks great for the 37 seconds its clean.

i ordered Piano Black on my 2023 X5 because it matched the trim around the shift gate and i think it looks great. I don't think i would have ordered it with any other trim, but that's just me.

I never realized how much people overthink something that seems so minor. I picked my interior trim color on a whim, and even changed my exterior color at the absolute last second just so I could add an extra option on the car.

Whatever color you choose, you'll get used to it in about a day.
