Those getting a CEL - what’s your current situation?

After a 4 month wait of my XM sitting at the port due to stop sale, and a little over a week of ownership and 650 miles in, I’ve been hit with a CEL. It’s comical.

I’m dreading bringing the car in as I was just getting the hang of it and also was looking forward to the break in service being completed.

For those who’ve experienced having the light come on and having dropped the car off at the dealer, what’s your current situation? I’ve seen the thread mentioning some cars being returned due to lemon law; was wondering if others have experienced any progress as far as the issue being mechanically resolved and if so, what’s the timeline looking like or what did it look like?

Depends on what the CEL is. I had one because of a switch from my generator back to utility power. The car didn’t like it but nothing came out of it, just a reset.

I had multiple assistance systems errors depending on the iLevel version, but nothing leaving my stranded on the road yet.

At the moment I have one on the 50e, I’m waiting for the dealer to update his ista to 4.43.1x to have iLevel 23-07-540. The car is driving fine.

You’re right - it does depend. I’m hoping mine is as minor as yours, and not that reported valve leak related issue some have been experiencing…

I have had 2 CEL and based on my OBD2 reader, it was from the battery cooling valve.
In my case, after observation, it only happens when I charge it for a little short period of time (15-30 minutes) then have to unplug it just because I need to take the car out.
So far it has been about 600 miles without plugging it in and it hasn’t come back.

During my break-in service, my SA told me about the recall and told me no rush since there is no part available anyway.

I haven’t tried charging the car again yet since I mainly drive on engine and have the re-gen set to max.
Once it get almost full, I send my kids to school and to office in full electric mode.

I think we all can agree that we all have the same issue that trigger the CEL?

Not for me. The first 3 times, they thought that might be the issue. Now we are into #4 & they’re messing around with the whole AC system. Highest engineers at corp are using mine to test, but no one knows exactly what’s causing the issue. No answers yet.

My first XM was taken back by the dealer after sitting there 20+ days for a part. I think it was the brake booster.

My replacement XM threw a CEL at around 600 miles. It was just in for the break in service (which the differential fluid is backordered so they couldn't even complete that... don't get me started), and they found 2 codes. Two parts were ordered but I wasn't given an ETA. The "left side AC shut off valve" and the "DMTL pump".

Was told the XM is safely driveable, so I have it back home for now.

Due to my experience w/ my '21 45e in the shop for 4.5 months last year - I strongly recommend to get BMWNA involved asap to cover your a**. Call the 1800 number and ask to get an Executive level rep to deal w/ your case (this will take 2 or 3 days). If its nothing, then nothing will happen. If it's something, then you at least have a team at Corp to look over the issue and track it. That also puts pressure on your local BMW to get it right.
cheers

Finally got around the bringing the car in. Add me to the victim list of the “expansion valve” issue. Luckily, the dealer was able to source the part in 24 hours and labor is relatively quick. CEL came on at around 650 miles, then disappeared for a couple hundred more miles and finally came back on. Also had the break in service done.

CEL went on a couple weeks ago. BMW was quick to replace the AC valve to battery. Drove the car about 300 miles, and CEL came on again today. Taking it back to the dealer to have it diagnosed. Getting annoying as this is my daily driver.

All good. CEL doesn’t scare me when the car still running fine.
Gonna scan it once I get in the office, most likely the same battery cooling valve.

Mine came back on shortly after I picked up the car too… I find it hilarious. Even though it has no effect on the car or it’s performance whatsoever, it’s still an inconvenience; despite the fact that you have to accept every first year production model BMW will have its issues — that is, if you’ve been buying these cars long enough. I remember back in 2001 our E46 M3 was in and out of the dealer two weeks after we took delivery. Same with our E60 M5 back in 2005. Surprisingly, the cars in between haven’t been as problematic. Aside from the atrocious fuel pump issue on the N54 motors around 2008-2009. I hated that.

Have never had a car returned to a dealer under the lemon law so I have zero experience in that department. But if the shoe fits….

Update for those curious: refrigerant shut off valve was stuck… basically the same problem as the first CEL. However this time they flushed the refrigerant circuit.

They know that if the problem occurs one more time it’s a lemon. Gave me a NEMA 14-50 adaptor cable for “goodwill” — not sure why these cars don’t come with them from the factory, anyway.

One weird observation I noticed since getting the car back: my electric range displays up to 42 miles now when fully charged, and the car does feel a bit more powerful during pulls. The instant torque from the electric motor seem stronger…

Maybe they flashed your XM base into a Label.

“There’s a chip for that.” Speaking of the race chip, when does it actually come out?
