iPhone 15 issue with BMW wireless charger
According to Macrumors:
"Over the past week, some BMW owners have complained that their iPhone 15's NFC chip no longer works after charging the device with their vehicle's wireless charging pad, according to comments shared on the MacRumors Forums and X, formerly known as Twitter. Affected customers say the iPhone goes into a data recovery mode with a white screen, and the NFC chip is no longer functional after the device reboots." https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/01...e-15-nfc-chip/

Wireless charger problems are nothing new or unique to BMW.

Charging pad issues do not shock me at all. I never use it except for storage. Never have I had a in-car charger that was worth a hoot. Plug it in and hit the road. No big deal.

Anyway, I've used the pad in my 50e with my 15 Pro Max. It worked as well as it did with my 14 Pro Max and so far has done nothing untoward to the phone. That being said, the location and design of the pad is just silly, given the fact that wireless charging always creates heat -- and that heat should have a better path for dissipation than the little unventilated phone cave that that BMW created. So if I really need to charge, I'm more typically using a USB-C cable now. To me, the pad is really a novelty rather than a tool, based on BMW's design decisions. |

I have noticed that my iPhone 14 Pro Max gets very hot on my 2024 X5's charging pad. So I avoid using it unless I really need to charge it in the car. A related weird thing I've noticed but not really diagnosed or proven, is that when I instead plug it into the USB-C charging port in the center console storage bin, to charge it, it seems like CarPlay won't connect to the phone. That doesn't make much sense, and I need to see what's going on there.

I have the 15 PM and have used my wireless charger all the time, including 6 hours of driving last weekend. I used Apple play today without issue. '21 X5.

Not in the user interface natively that I'm aware of. Folks were previously retrofitting their BMW's with wireless chargers during the shortages and then coding it on. I suppose you could just do the opposite with BimmerCode or similar.

I am the first batch of victim on this issue... got iphone 15 plus on Sept 22nd, then went with my LCI, suddenly apple pay not working at all.
Tried many things did not work, then decided to return it back to apple store. From the original macrumor thread, looks like it is nothing to do with BMW wireless charging, at least it is not a hardware problem. (but TBH, I always use wireless charging even at home without issue, only happened after using X5 charing, so it is still part of triggering) BTW, my iphone 12 pro has no issue so far regardless. |

A few points...
- the iPhone pro Max exceeds the BMW size requirements for the charging pad - there are some known issues with overheating on the 15 series related to a bug they've identified in the firmware, and three programs that are causing the phones to overheat: Instagram, UBER, and one game - there's a lot of background setup being done for the first few days at least on a new phone that will cause it to run warmer than normal - if the phone is not properly centered indicated by the status LED (in a crappy position, so hard to notice IMHO), it will not properly charge potentially running warmer - iOS version 17.1 is expected soon to address the firmware bug, but look for the app updates to resolve their issues. - note, there is a case maximum thickness listed in the manual, so that could be an issue, too. A case's existence can act like an insulator, making the phone warmer - if the phone detects it is running too hot, it can shut down some functions to help preserve itself I've not had issues with my older iPhone with a case on it, but a new 15Pro should be delivered on Monday, then I'll see what my particular situation is. I do not use Apple CarPlay, or normally run apps on my phone, so the only loads on it are background stuff and charging. I put it in the tray when I'm expecting to go through marginal cellular coverage to take advantage of the LTE compensator. |

FWIW: My 15 Pro Max was replaced under warranty on Saturday at the Apple Store. Apple Pay and the digital key were not working. Remote Support and Genius Bar diagnostics showed two failures with the NFC sensor. As far as they could tell, the flaw was present at delivery of the original phone. They said it was a hardware issue and immediately replaced the phone with a brand new 15 Pro Max updated to 17.0.2 software and it has worked flawlessly since. Additionally, it’s been on the wireless charger pad of my ‘24 50e multiple times since with no issues. At only 1130 am, mine was the third iPhone 15 warranty replacement my tech had processed that day! The other two were supposedly overheating issues.

that said, CarPlay is wireless. whether the phone is charging wirelessly or plugged in, it should work unless you have preexisting CarPlay connection issues because it doesn’t make sense it would stop working while being plugged in. I have an iPhone 14 Pro and it works (note I do have a 2021 X5 in iDrive 7 which has had solid CarPlay performance since I bought it) |

Understood but earlier someone said CarPlay doesn’t work when the phone is plugged in.

This thread should be locked. BMW wireless chargers are not causing iPhone 15 failures specifically.
