I am not an XM owner yet, but BMW typically comes out with three releases per year - the latest being in July. It typically takes about three months to start showing up as an available OTA update. Although you can’t request a software update for free from the dealership without being tied to a service issue, they are able to upgrade it as soon as it’s released. It’s also worth noting if there are any fault codes on your vehicle, it may prevent an OTA update from showing up.

We have numerous threads covering the topic on the iX portion of the forum. Until the July updates start hitting those vehicles this month, everyone else is on a 03/2023.xx version. It shouldn’t be any different on the XM. You should see the July update this month.

Great to know!

Xm had a service recall for an app update / software update only they could do which affected the charger / charge app.

I remember it literally took the dealer all day 😂

The updates usually come out in March, July, and November. Just takes a while for them to show up via OTA.

Mine (build end of July- delivered last week) shows 03/2023.82 in the My BMW app
Dealer told me that in November the update to 8.5 will be available

Unless your vehicle was produced in August or September, you won’t be able to get iDrive 8.5 because you have the older MGU21 head unit which is not upgradable to 8.5. It requires the MGU22 head unit which the XM started getting in August. A retrofit is also not possible because the wiring harnesses are completely different. Here is some internal BMW documentation provided to the dealers (HU-H4 is MGU21, HU-H5 is MGU22).

Unfortunately I’ve learned all of this going through the same thing on my iX M60. They changed over to the new head unit in March on those vehicles. That’s the reason I want a ‘24 XM specifically. In addition to being upgradable to 8.5 (which will already be on any XM built after August), the updated head unit provides augmented reality in the instrument cluster and highway assistant.

I was really looking forward to purchasing this 2024 XM, but the trade-in offer was so insulting on my ‘23 iX M60, and the least terms were so poor that I’d have to be a complete idiot to take either one - let alone both. Maybe next year.

Not worth it… look at it this way bmw along with 99.9% of all automakers suck are OS and updates and are experts at fragmenting their fleet and making new hardware and OS every year…

They should study Apple, android, Tesla… build the cpu/os and with this new beautiful dash keep it ongoing via updates … but no they want to start all over every year 😂

When I bought my iX in January, they weren’t even passing the EV tax credit down to the customer like they are now (on leases). There was no incentive to lease at the time like there is now. Because of all of the stop sales and vehicles piling up at the VPC due to frustrated customers and cancelled orders, BMW started offering a $9,900 lease incentives and some people are even getting 10 to 15% off MSRP on top of that. in January, you couldn’t find these anywhere, so it wasn’t uncommon to have dealers marking 5 to 10 K over MSRP. I definitely bought at the wrong time. The EV’s are selling so well, that they’ve continued these incentives for three or four months in a row. It’s really screwed me as a result.

I’ve got an update prompt tonight. Running 07/2023.40 and the update is 07/2023.53 which is probably the latest from the 07 branch.

It seems the G05 folks also
