Euro pickup: Post your dream itinerary.

I came across a map that was part of an old BMW E46 Coupe promo package. It shows a 2000 kilometer suggested Euro pickup itinerary starting in Munich, going over the Brenner pass, into the Dolomite mountains, reaching the Gardasee, Verona, Maranello, Florence, La Spezia, Genoa and back to Munich.

Anyone care to share their plans or past experiences. Pics are always nice.

I am looking to end in either Paris or Marseilles... so... (with Paris as the drop off):

Northwest from the factory to Nurburg for a lap or two of the 'ring, maybe a jaunt over to Spa (spousal approval pending), back down through Switzerland into Italy (via the best mountain pass I can find, evo often recommends several, Stelvio ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelvio_Pass ) being high on the list), then westward via Monte Carlo and the Cote d'Azure to Beziers, then northward to Paris.

:roundel:Well I don't know about a dream trip but we're planning on something like this next June:

Munich - (Pick up 135i, drink some beer, see some sites)
Dachau - (not a lot of grins, but worth seeing none the less)
Rothenburg - (see some sites, drink some beer, do some shopping)
Fussen - (tour Hohenschwan/Neuschwanstein, drink some beer)
Garmisch - (travel to top of Zugspitze, drink some beer)
Munich - (drop off 135i, see more sites, drink more beer)

The real trick is going to be coordinating the driving of the 135i & drinking the beer!:drinking:

I've done:
  • Munich > Heidelberg > Strasbourg > Zurich > Grindelwald > Füssen > Salzburg > Vienna > Munich
  • Munich > Cologne > Ferry to Denmark > Copenhagen > Bremen > Frankfurt
  • Munich > Heidelberg > Epernay (FR), Paris > Geneva (ZH), Freiburg (DE), Munich
  • Munich > Salzburg > Verona > Venice > Füssen > Garmisch > Munich
  • Munich > Freiburg > Barcelona > Valencia > Madrid
  • (few more)
All incredible destinations! I'm fortunate to have family in Germany and break up my travel by visiting...

I would like my sister-in-law and BMW to get together and time her wedding along with the US release of the 123d.

That way I can fit together my ED trip and her wedding in Sardinia, Italy. (Her, and her 'novio' live there.) Then drop off the car in France and take a hop over to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, so my wife can visit where she grew up.

That way I can leverage the expense of going to Europe to get a car, with taking a trip we will have to do anyways. That would save having to do 2 different trips, knocking down the actual out-of-pocket expense of doing an ED. The additional cost of doing the ED would be just the cost of gas minus how much I would have spent on a rental car.

Now that I think of it, I might actually come out ahead between the rental car and 3-4 tanks of gas in a 123d. So that could mean doing ED could actually SAVE me money on a trip I will have to do anyways. crazy.

Think July or August for a trip through there. As a teenager I was stranded for 2 days sleeping in a BMW 320 waiting for Grimsel Pass to be cleared of snow so they could open the road. This was in late June...

To not include Geneva in your plans would be ridiculous. That place is amazing.

Not in the exact order but...

Munich - pick up the car, drive to Stuttgart and check out the Porsche factory

Northern Italy - find the Top Gear famed Stelvio Pass right on the Swiss border and drive it!

Swiss Alps, more exploring

Back to Germany towards Nurnberg and do a mild spirited drive below 5k rpm on the Nurburgring

Park car in Germany, take train to Paris, France and go sightseeing.

Return to Germany, drop off car at port.

What do you know that I (we) don't? Talking about the 123d, not your sister's wedding

So far mine is looking like:

Munich: Spend a few days here after getting the car. We'll do some shopping and sight seeing.
Zell am See (or Wald): Depending on how long I feel like driving that day. Either way, we'll be spending one night in either city, then driving down south on the 107.
Winklem: Spend one night here after driving down the 107. Then we're going to take the 108 North the next day We're going to try and get as far as Zurich. We may stay outside the city a bit though.

After that we're just going to see where we want to go. My GF wants to go to a big horse stable in the Netherlands, and also wants to go to Belgium. More than likely we'll be dropping the car off in Amsterdam then flying out of there.
