PSA: 2019 G05 B58 should all check your oil levels TODAY

After reading several issues about the supposedly reliable B58 having issues with the oil pump I decided to run the oil level check after 1 hour of driving and of course it failed at 21%

Dealer now wants $6000 to replace the oil pump and is not willing to budge on price.

BMWUSA refuses to do recall on this defective item from the factory

This is from BMW putting a cheap plastic oil pump cover that should be a lifetime replacement. Of course 2020+ models now use the updated pump.

Hopefully this can save someone who still has CPO warranty.

This is likely my last BMW

27,xxx miles on odometer last week

So... Is the oil leaking out of the oil pump cover? Where's the oil going?

Damn, that is messed up. It is quite a big job for B58 too because timing chain is at the back where the flex plate is. And oil pump is driven by timing chain component.

Would escalate it to BMW NA help? I will make sure I check my oil pressure 1 month before warranty ends.

It is oil pump issue, no leak necessary. just oil pressure not on target or not exist at extreme case, no lube, bad for engine

Isn't there some kind of low oil warning?

So is the issue that you have low oil, or low oil pressure (which i don't think you can check on your own without a scan toll)? Why not put a quart of oil in and see how it goes? When was the last time you had an oil change, and did you check oil level shortly after the oil change?

Hello
The oil temperature is to hot after one hour driving.
The measurement will fall at 21 % ( i get this fail too when try measuring hot oil)
But oil measurement works if i am above 60 degrees celsius and before 96 degrees celsius.
Try to drive for 5-10 minutes and measure on straight pavement.
Hope it helps

It's got nothing to do with oil level. One of the ways to find out if you have a bad oil pump is the inability of manually checking the oil level when the engine is hot as it relies on the oil pump to maintain a tight window of pressure. When the pump is going out it will actually read high oil pressure than it's supposed to. I should've also mentioned that there's a notable humming sound the varies with rpm is another thing I noticed.

other than the 'humming,' what other symptoms? have you noticed a lack of power? Low oil pressure seems like it would throw a check engine light, or the low oil pressure light. Do you have both?

After reviewing this thread, I did a search and found several sites with information, pictures and videos related to the B58 oil pump failures, listed below.

Conclusions from these:
1) The oil pump impeller, vanes and stator (impeller housing) are metal, but the stator is housed within a plastic housing which includes the stator pivot point and contact point for the pressure regulator, which varies stator eccentricity which, in turn varies pump capacity.
2) When the oil pump fails, the result is low oil pressure (consistent with the failure modes illustrated in the referenced photos and videos, which show that the regulator's ability to increase stator eccentricity, and therefore pump capacity, is reduced or eliminated.
3) It appears the engine does not need to be removed to replace the oil pump, but removal of the front subframe does appear to be required.

What I have not found is a theory as to why they fail or how common or rare the failure is, though at this point it appears there are many high mileage B58 engines with this oil pump that have not failed (this engine is used in a variety of models in addition to the X5/X6). It appears BMW did change the pump on the X5 to all metal beginning with MY2020.

As for my 2019 x40i at almost 55K miles, an oil level check yesterday proceeded normally.

I’m really surprised that BMWNA isn’t helping out. I’ve had an uncommon issue with my out of warranty X5 with low mileage and they covered some of the cost. Don’t expect them to pay for it. They definitely will not. Your service advisor should chase this for you. I’m a loyal BMW consumer, so maybe that is a factor as to why they assisted me.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't this fall under the longer powertrain warranty?

There is no such thing, just the standard 4yrs/50k miles.

This is one reason I love Toyota. I had a 4Runner that blew a head gasket at 113K miles. Toyota did a warranty repair - no charge, on a car with a 36K mile warranty.

So I had the same issue on my 2019, and swapped the pump myself. Definitely a big job, as you have to remove the suspension subframe. front axles, etc.. That said, the old pump seemed ok visually. There was one thread where they showed broken plastic and all, which was not the case on mine. Anyway, can't really take a chance on a malfunctioning oil pump, so I opted to replace.

I just got a 2019. This has me a little concerned.

I think I will periodically run the oil level check, and hopefully if this issue develops I'll get some warning.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Was the humming sound noticeable at all times, at startup, idling, while driving? Or only when the oil reached operating temp?
