Ceramic tint is non-metallic, and it won't interfere with the rear window antennas.

SUBJECT
Window Tint Affects Radio Reception and Remote Range

MODEL
All

INFORMATION
BMW vehicles (excluding convertibles) have antennas on the inside surface of the rear window glass. The antennas, which consist of ribbons of conductive material, provide the signals for both Radio operation and the operation of the Remotes. The antennas are located on the rear window, and on the rear side window (X5/Sport Wagons). Refer to the ETM for specific antenna locations.

Aftermarket window tint is a plastic film that is applied to the interior of the glass. This film contains small amounts of carbon or ceramic material which reduces the effectiveness of the antennas. BMW owners, who have aftermarket window tint installed, may find that this affects both AM/FM Radio reception and the range of the Remotes.

In case of complaint, owners should be advised accordingly.

so from that SIB a non-ceramic tint only affects two componentes, the radio and the remotes right? NOT the nav?

I've always had a regular tint in my cars even with the antenna in the window and it never effecting anything...personally I think the ceramic thing is a money rip off.

Where does it say that? I was under the impression that metallic tint blocks those out and ceramic does not

Unless I'm reading this incorrectly... From the statement posted above.

Whether or not the tint is ceramic has nothing to do with blocking any kind of radio waves. I have called several places (and no I'm not talking about those ghetto-funk get free tint with 50 sub-woofer purchase places) and they all say the same thing. The ceramic tint blocks more of the sun's rays and rejects up to 86% infra-red light. The non-ceramic tints are not capable of doing this.

Here is the tint my wife is going with and the info on nano-ceramic tint...
http://www.huperoptikusa.com/products_ceramic.cfm

P.S. - Hüper Optik is also German engineered and this is what they say they all put on the more expensive luxury and high-end sports cars.

Ceramic tints main benefit is its ability to reject solar heat... A secondary benefit is that is does not block any radio/radar signal.

My thoughts exactly. I am stationed in the middle of Georgia, literally. If it doesn't go ba-ding-ding-dong or involve a "pony" car they don't know what to do with it. I think I will email the dealer and see if they know of a ceramic tint dealer/installer.

It's my car that it's going on, and there's a place called Class on Glass in Orlando, Fl that will be doing it. I was told by the man at the shop that it is very hard to become a licensed dealer for this particular kind of ceramic tint. Trust me, it is a little on the pricey side- surpassing the Llumar and 3M (that the shop also installs) times two. I was quoted $299 on the Hüper Optik, and the LLumar/3M starts off at $129 to $159.

In my thinking it is worth getting in efforts to protect the interior of my car. I did go with the real leather and even though the leather reflects some light, the UV/UVA is horrible here in Florida. I don't want my leather to crack or look older before it's time.

How did you find the dealer for the tint? I followed your link but there didn't seem to be a dealer locator.

This was a very long, long process... It started out about a week ago I called over 15 window tinting shops in and around Orlando. I would ask each one "What's the best overall tint you recommend?"... As I got toward the end of my list I heard the name of this company. I took it to the web and started researching, until finally I found a dealer, Class on Glass, in Orlando. You can contact the company...

Thanks. I have been on the internet and even went old-school and used a phone book. Seems like everyone that provides information uses metallic.

This a video about the tint- they show how it works in extreme heat. It's a low quality clip, but you can hear it just fine.

I'm going back and forth between the 30 and the 40 %..
I'll probably make my decision when I get to the shop and see them in person. I'll post pictures when I'm all done!

I just got 40% ceramic tint done yesterday. Looks really nice. When I get the time I'll get some pics posted. By the way, the ceramic tint cost me $300.

I have ceramic tints on my 135i, and it's 35% all round except the front of course.
3 reasons why I got this type of tint -
- 1. It blocks sun rays very well
- 2. It allows my V1 detector to continue to work (yes, I can confrim that my V1 is working as it should be with 35% in the rear)
- 3. Ceramic was the only choice at the dealership, but they do include a lifetime warranty with it. I wanted to get the tints done at the dealership, because of some horror stories I read from some earlier threads.
The final result is excellent even though it costed me $300! Since I don't know any recommended tint guys in town. IMHO, it's worth the extra $50-$80 dollars for the peace of mind on a brand new $40K BMW.
