135 or used 335?

Hi all,

I am just wondering if any of you with orders for 135s considered buying an 06/07 335 for similar money? If not why not?

I think they are a great looking car and drove one a couple of weeks ago. I currently drive a 350z and like the "chuckability" factor of it which I think the 335 doesn't have but maybe the 135 does?

Cheers

After owning a new car for the first time, I will find it difficult to go back to buying a used one. Too many compromises, usually. I wandered through my dealers lot looking at the pricepoint that I was interested in and most of them were 320's or 325's. I can't say that I recall seeing any used 335's over here.

Just looked. There's one and it's listed as "$109,900 (Price excludes statutory charges)" and has wood trim, which instantly eliminates it for me. See?

Australia wide, they're almost all over $100,000 and the ones that aren't are darn close to it. So, +$20K to what I am paying for a 135i with exactly what I want.

The thing that REALLY pisses me off is that they're supposedly only US$5K more than the 135 in the great US of A. But, you get that. They also have <5% interest car loans and <9% luxury car tax. There must be a downside somewhere Oh yeah, according to them it's that the 135i comes with a "neon-deleatable sunroof"

Sure you might find a stock standard at that price..
But you can compare a new 135i with all the trimmings to a used 335i.. IMO..

Yup, probably me too. Just for the extra size.

As to how they adjust their pricing? Who knows? I do know that the 135i is cheaper here than "they" expected, from what I have read. So, it's probably just a marketing thing, you know - "It's the size of the market, man".

Zuzu, hate to be the spelling police, but surely you missed a "'t" off the end of that "can"?

Actually the 125i/135i is relatively cheap in Australia. WHich is why you can't work out the descrepency. Given we all love the 1 series here. we have nothing to complain about.

Harpoon, I never ever considered a 335i. I wanted something more for the track. Probably would have looked into a M3 if the 135i didn't exist.

Yeh its bloody frustrating isn't it. And the prices of the M3 in US do my head in. Same in the UK. You can get an e46 M3 for GBP12k there.

But yeh, have to jack up the LCT.

Ok so you'd definitely consider the 135 as more of a drivers car then. Is that just based on power/weight ratio?

I go to the track 3 or 4 times a year and generally drive in a spirited fashion I guess...so sounds like I'd e more suited to the 1...

Just for a laugh, I configured a 335xi (AWD version) on the BMW USA website to be as close to my 135i config as was obvious:

My 335xi Sedan 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine, xDrive, intelligent all-wheel-drive

Base MSRP
$40,800
Sparkling Graphite Metallic $475
Gray Dakota Leather $1,450
Brushed Aluminum trim $0
Sport Package $900
Comfort Access system $500
iPod and USB adapter $400
M Aerodynamic Kit $1,250
iPodŽ Interface Adapter $320
Destination & Handling: $775

Total MSRP as Built $46,870

Now, in Aussie $$'s at todays exchange rates, that's $50,145.83

That's just plain depressing . I'm not going to do that any more. There are some glaring discrepencies there, for example they pay US$475 for metallic paint, we pay AU$1600 - go figure.

Well...the way I look at it. Cars and gas in the USA may be cheap but they've got to put up with George W. Err..then again we've got Krudd......you're right, we're stuffed!

There is no doubt that the 135i is more of a drivers car. There are a few reviews with 135i and 335i in the same review. Read them and you will see what I mean. Also I generally like smaller cars for the track, which is why I didn't fall for the M3 when it came out. To me

Second hand car market here is overpriced and that doesnt help things.

I sat in a 3 series coupe and just found it was too big dimensionally for me. That is why I am now swaying to the 1. I have never enjoyed piloting large cars for some reason. I think I prefer the more nimble nature of smaller cars.

Garage List
2008 BMW 135i  [8.66]
I was in the USA 2 months ago and visited a BMW dealer in Charlotte, North Carolina Almost cried when I saw the prices of the M3 - $69000 with all options. M6 about $90,000.

Next door at the Porsche dealer the Turbo was $90,000. They were even giving Porsche's away if you bought an apartment.

I never even considered a secondhand 335. Actually I didn't consider the BMWs (other than a Z4 coupe) until the 135 came along. Of course, if someone gives me a 335, I'd take it and sell it so that I can get the 135

Personally, I don't find the 335 pretty or elegant and does nothing for me. :iono: (so shoot me) I especially dislike the rear quarter as the lines seem to cut off abruptly compared to the 135 flowing lines.

For me, it's the same with other cars too. I love the Cayman, and would get that over the Boxster or the 911. In the Golf GTIs, it's the 3 door over the 5 door. Each to his own.
