Go Brendan Go!!
In his budget reply Brendan Nelson stated the Libs would use their majority power in the Senate (till 1 July) to block key features of the Labor budget - namely alcopop tax, increase in Medicare threshold etc and more importantly...the fascist pig increase in the LCT!!!

Excellent news, that will be so cool. I agree with blocking all of them.

No, it means (as I understand it) that they'll block approval of those items. The government has the choice to either rollover and take them out or refuse and that then means that supply is blocked. That means no funding for all operations of government (wages, defense etc) after a certain date. That's where I get hazy, I think it then means a forced election.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Senate under "Blocking Supply" for better info.

I sway to the Liberals way of doing things although I do not vote. It's brilliant how reactionary these politicians are...previous govt could have reduced fuel excise etc when they were in power.
Labour just showing its inexperience with this budget in my opinion. |

If Half Nelson does block the rise in the LCT then Labor can reintroduce the bill after the Libs lose control of the Senate (1 July). They will then have to gain the approval of new Senator Nick Xenophon, Family First & The Greens to pass the bill. If Once again the Bill can not be passed (with or without amendments) then Labor would be forced to call an election
The Libs would be mad to force a double dissolution, as they would get slaughtered in their current state of disarray and they have no money to fight another election so soon after losing the last. The issue the LCT simply does not carry much resonance with average joe on the street who doesn't care if someones BMW or Mercedes is going to cost more, & if they do it will be to support the extra cost. |

if the lct increase could affect you in the hundreds as well as in the tens of thousands so the average joe is just not getting a very good deal is he? especially when there are "some vehicles for large families" that will clearly get affected by the increase in lct. like what i wonder? SUVs, MPVs, mini-buses?!

The LCT affects 10% of new car sales, so it doesn't really concern many people.
I'm not saying it is a good policy, only discussing the politics of forcing a double dissolution election over an issue that will not resonate with the population only 6 months after having your arse handed to you on a plate, having an ineffectual leader, having no firm policy platform, mired in backstabbing & disunity, & the Government enjoying near record popularity. |

Hope they can block that increase on the LCT, or the intelligent thing would be: Ok lets go ahead with the increase but also raise the threashold for LCT to about 100,000 which for me is where the real luxury car should be call.
