Exclamation You have to have a paid Connected Services account to install updates?

I let my Connected Services account expire after the initial term on my 2019 and for the last few years BMW will not install, finish, my SUCCESSFUL downloads to the car. Lately they have been downloaded via my BMW app and then transferred via bluetooth from my phone to the car.

Conversations with our local "Genius" has been no help - battery has to be good (it's running 13.4V) and other yada yada.

I'm stumped why it won't update when parked in my garage! You have to pay the BMW gods to be selected for this no brainer process to complete?

I experienced this 5 times. I was still running a 2021 version. Finally my dealer installed the latest version when I took it in for the starter recall 2 weeks ago.

No you don't, Remote Updates are included free as long as technically possible. Not having an update install is pretty common unfortunately.

No answer in whether it has two be an active account, but 13.4 is low on a battery......fwiw. I would presume/assume the system want's to see at least a consistent 13.7/13.8 before it will allow the car to run the update.

Greetings. You're not the only person that has had woes with getting updates to load to their vehicle. I have even heard of people performing the updates and fails mid install to where the vehicle has to be flatbed to the dealer. I've only done one update to my vehicle and decided its not worth the hassle. I may have been one of the lucky ones. I'll only update my vehicle again IF there is some safety issue, major flaw, or problem that the software upgrade would fix.

Assuming resting, that is not low at all, that is above 100% SOC. Charging of course should higher than that but irrelevant as the install is at rest.

Did they charge you? Does the latest roll up previous ones that never did install?

Thanks

Are you saying "updates won't download" or "updates won't install" while parked in your garage? If you have a metal roof or metal backed insulation in your house, OTA signal reception can be compromised. Have you tried parking outside? Or are you updating via smartphone or wi-fi?

If you ask a dealer to do an update they will usually charge you and in some cases make you sign a waiver that any problems that arise will not be covered and you would have to pay to have them fixed. Not worth it obviously. In rmorin1249 's case the update was free since it was the remedy for the starter recall.

Every version is cumulative so when installed contains all previous changes, fixes, etc.

As he mentioned, he is able to successfully download the update to his vehicle, it just won't install.

If there’s an internal fault code, that can prevent the update from starting (if you have a scan tool, you might try deleting them), but the other known things that need to happen (that I remember) are as follows:
- off, not in ready mode
- parked on the level (and ideally, outside so it can be accessed if something goes wrong…not common, but why not be safer)
- the battery level(s) sufficient
- parking brake on

The offer to start an update after being loaded occurs after a trip when you turn the vehicle off. It usually is finished in about 20-minutes, and the display will show you when it is okay to leave the vehicle.

13.4 volts is high unless you check it withing a few minutes of driving the vehicle or if the battery has a problem. An aged battery will get a condition referred to as "surface charge" and although voltage is high, it will drop 2 volts or more when a load is placed on battery. A possible way to see if it is battery is to attach jumper cables from another vehicle and see if the install goes through. The voltage is likely checked with a number of modules active and the voltage may be much lower if checked when modules are active and drawing current. Another battery connected might keep voltage at a level that allows install.
I use a power supply that assures battery voltage is high as the power supply has 85A capacity but is regulated to 13.4 V whenever I'm coding or using a scan tool to do anything where vehicle is power on for more than 10 minutes. The energy management system will shut down non-essential modules if the IBS reports higher current draw for a few minutes The higher voltage of power supply is outside the condition where load management occurs. If the car goes into the load shedding mode an update can fail and be unrecoverable without a dealer forced reflash/recovery.

I have a metal roof. The download was installed successfully from my phone BMW app via Bluetooth. I'm not even getting a notice to park the car for the install. The file is in the car, it's just stuck regarding a typical update like to a Windows system.

Years ago when it was under warranty and I had BMW Connected Service I had no problems

Same here I did the first update on my 2022 and never allowed it to download anything else. It’s running fine and as far as I’m concerned, I’ll never do another one unless it’s a safety feature update.

When I did mine (download via phone), it asked that I drive the vehicle to upload/install to vehicle. It wasn't a short drive. Are you getting any such message?

He has already done the download step successfully, he is not getting asked to install which is a very common issue.

Again, I get the file into the car but it won't install when parked. I have 2021 date on the last one.
