Ship Tracking

Hi All,
I have been informed that my new X5 is at sea (was quoted build code 195) and last updated on 9th October.
I got these details using the BMW UK page and using live chat.
Got excited that its on its way but they could not provide me any information as to what ship it would be on. Was told that their system provides limited information.
Does anybody know who I could contact in the UK that would have this information?
Also, I was informed that my car was being built in Spartanburg, but I found an old thread on Bimmerpost, which shows the first 3 letters of my VIN, which is WBA, as Germany??
I would be most grateful if anybody could provide any further information to this.

Have you tried your dealer? They may be able to give you the ship name or at least the date of departure.

Your X5 was definitely built in Spartanburg and not Germany. If the VIN they gave you starts with a W then it is the wrong VIN.

That was going to be my next option, I didn't want them to think I was becoming a nuisance customer!!
Thats strange about the VIN because when I put that that into Mdecoder, it comes up with the spec of my car.
I have also put the same VIN in the My BMW app and it shows the same car.
Should I be concerned?

I wouldn't be concerned since it shows everything. Maybe the VIN country rules are different for the UK. Here the first digit means the country the vehicle was built in. For my X5 it is a 5 and for my M340i it is a W. Perhaps over there it goes by where the manufacture is based rather than where it is built.

Thanks you.
Yes as long as I get what I ordered and it goes without any problems then I don't care where its made.
Will see if I can get the ship details from my dealer tomorrow.
Hopefully if I get it, then I can track it just like I did my hot tub that was coming from China!!!

It was definitely made in the US, there is no question about that. It is just why do you have a VIN starting with a W.

I will ask that question to the dealer to see if they know why and let you know.

Spoke to the dealer today. They don't hold any information on shipping details. All he could give me was a carrier load number. Not sure if that would be recognised anywhere. Guess I will just have to wait and go by his last information which was delivery expect in week 44.
He didn't know much more about the VIN beginning with WBA either other then maybe the parts come from Germany.
Seems that the USA has a lot more information availability when it comes to tracking.
Shame though as from my study window on a good day, I can see the container ships sail past on the Solent on their way to Southampton Docks. Would have been nice to say, oh look, there goes my car!! Lol.

You may be able to determine the ship by using that. First though, did you check which ships recently sailed from Charleston. I would look back for the last week or so.

I didn't know which port it would definately be sailing from and then what date. How often do they sail from there? The 195 was updated on 9th so if its only once a week then I could find it that way.
Do you know of which sites would give past sailings from Charleston?

They sail at various times. You will want to look at ships that left from the Columbus Street terminal. This link shows those that left in the last 10 days. I saw there was one headed to Bremerhaven and one to Southampton but didn't look at any others so there could be more. Hopefully you can find out which one using the number you have.

Thank you for that information. I ended up on that site as well but didn't know which 1 to look at until you told me about the Columbus Street.
I think it might be on the Victoria Highway which is direct to Southampton and due to arrive on 17th October.
Not sure if the other one going to Bremerhaven has an onward delivery journey afterwards.
Thanks once again.

Updated on 18th now shows my status as 193 which concerned me as I was told last week it was 195 at at sea.
Agent has told me though it has arrived in the UK (Southampton) and awaiting delivery which will be this week.
I was expecting the code to change to 196 after arrival. Is this normal?

Yes, that is the correct status for that stage.

My car is into Southampton soon. Just wondering when you had delivery so I know how long the turn around is roughly?

I went on the online chat just now and its a status code 198. Delivered to the dealership in Portsmouth. This was updated 24th October.
I have not heard from the dealer yet but I have tracker and a dash cam to be fitted. Also I had the paint protection which I guess they do there as well.
Not sure how long this process takes but I am hoping they will call me sometime this week.
I was under the impression that I would need to pay for the tracker before it is fitted as there is a subscription to sign up to.
My girlfriend and I are always joking that the app is teasing me by stating Nearly Yours!!!

Had a call from the dealer today.
I may be able to pick up my car this Thursday.
There were a couple of options on which tracker to be installed. The Trackstar S5 or S5 Advance. S5 Advanced has a tag that has to be present with the key to be able to drive it.
Need to get insurance sorted now. The vehicle registration doesn't seem to be live yet so not sure if I can get insurance until it is. Need to make some phone calls.

I have been informed today that BMW no longer install Trackstar. I did notice that it was no longer an option when building a car online.
Sales person said he only found out today that BMW longer fit Trackstar but BMW do have their own version which will be fitted on Friday.
Pick up day for me now is next Tuesday.
The wait continues.

Was supposed to pick up my car today but had a phone call yesterday to say that part of the tracker wasn't available so they can't complete the installation.
No date of when this will be available.
Didn't have any issues during production but since it arrived in the UK I seem to be getting problems.
Annoyed that the dealer seems to be informing me at the last minute of these delays.
On a plus note, I was told that the APR had gone down 1% on the PCP!!

Finally picked up my car on Wednesday.
Discovered some slight damage to the paintwork at the rear end of the car.
Waiting for it to get booked in to the body shop.
Damaged all noted and photos taken.
Was able to drive it away though and wow, what a drive.
Got to get my head around all the tech now!!
