Nuvi Installation instructions

For those thinking about the Nuvi GPS install on your 1, here are , the instructions. I have the Nuvi 350, this kit will work with it. The only problem I have is that my 135i is somewhere on the ocean and I can't install right now. I just got back from a 2 week ED driving through Italy....1300 miles, 9 hotels, and $8.50 per gallon gas. I'm tired. The good news is that this car is fast and handles Great!

Fantastic! We'd love to see pics of your ED, and what this mount looks like when you get the car for redelivery in the States.

The bad news is you can't get the 1-series GPS kit without the BMW Nuvi unit, and it's around $600. The actual bracket is sold separately, which is about $20.

I ordered the kit for an E92 Friday, which does not include the Nuvi. It should be delivered on Tuesday.

Mad, IIRC, you have to put screws into the visible-if-removed dash padding with the e90/e92 kit.

The good news: You don't need to buy the Nuvi from BMW. The bracket will hold any of the 300 series Nuvi's. Costco sell a 350 model for about $200.

Best Buy had 350s on sale last week, so I got one from them.

I have the bracket (part C) for the E8x. I'm buying the E9x kit for the wiring harness (parts A-G), since you can't get it separately for the 1.

From the looks of it (attachment), the only difference in the E90 kit is the mounting bracket. Everything else should work. I'll post an update when I get everything.

The E90 kit works. The wiring harness has 2 extra wires which, oddly enough, aren't even used in the E90. You'll have to cut off two of the connectors and tuck the 4-pin plug out of the way somewhere.

Make sure you splice into the CAS wiring at least 6" away from the connector, or you won't be able to plug it back in.

Butchering the cluster trim piece is a pain in the ass, and mine has a 1/2" gap where I took out too much material. I might fill it in with model putty or something. A template would have been nice.

I didn't take any pictures, since I wanted to get it installed and go home. The repair instructions are well-illustrated. What isn't shown is removing the cluster, trim, and pedal trim. You'll need a set of torx drivers, preferably bits and a 1/4" ratchet. A small pistol-grip power screwdriver makes it a lot easier.

When you take out the pedal trim, you'll have to remove the MOST connection (square cover on the left side; carefully pry it open from the front and unplug the fiber optics), and unplug the emergency assist speaker, bluetooth antenna, and footwell light.

DO NOT turn on the ignition with the cluster, MOST, or TCU connections unplugged, or you will set faults. DO NOT touch the fiber optics or bend them too far. Bad things will happen.

Make sure you route the nav wires where they will not rub, get pinched between moving parts, or interfere with the re-installation of the cluster. Use double-sided tape to stick the 'black box' behind the dash (as shown in the instructions), and use plenty of zip ties. Wrap the splices with electrical tape, so they don't move around and work themselves loose.

E9x nav kit: 65 90 0 429 403
E8x base plate: 65 90 0 442 224
Connectors (for splicing into CAS): (x2) 61 13 8 364 566

Complete E8x nav kit w/Garmin Nuvi 360 (you'll still need the base plate and connectors): 65 90 0 441 655

This setup would be nice for the 4.5 display. After looking through the pdf, im assuming this connects somewhere beneath the start button.

I'm just glad it freed up a 12V socket, so I can charge my phone while listening to XM.

As far as I know, it only works with the Nuvi 310, 350, and 360. The bigger Garmin units have different docking connectors.

Just a note: Since you're unplugging components, this installation will set faults in the CAS, TCU (emergency speaker), and CAN bus. Once everything is back together, they won't have any effect on the operation of your car.

Power Off?

I just bought a nuvi 350 and I might order the wiring harness since it's the same unit. I'm curious if the harness automatically powers the nuvi on and off when you start and stop the car? Or do you still have to push the power button on the nuvi itself? Thanks!

It turns on automatically when the car is in KL15. When you turn the car off, it powers down after 30 seconds if you ignore the option to operate on internal battery power.

Thanks for posting this thread. I've been looking into GPS solutions, but was worried about having wires everywhere. This looks like the perfect solution.

I'm quite new to car modding, so I'm debating on whether or not to have the dealer install the bracket for me. I'll probably call and get a quote today.

If I understood the thread correctly, I will need the following to install the bracket:

E9x nav kit: 65 90 0 429 403
E8x base plate: 65 90 0 442 224
Connectors (for splicing into CAS): (x2) 61 13 8 364 566

Does this look correct? Where is a good place to purchase these? Thanks!

Is it possible to modify this kit such that the nav unit ends up in the dashboard storage bin and still allows the storage lid to be closed??

:iono:

Or, has anybody managed to find an aftermarket nav solution that makes use of the dashboard storage bin??
