Windshield Blues

Last week we had the windshield replaced on our 7,000 mile 25 X5. Well, yesterday it was blustery, and the wife called me to say that something smacked the windshield again and cracked it all to hell.

I was like you have to be kidding me right now. She was all upset and saying the car is cursed and she wants to sell it lol. I told her it happens and were not selling your car lol.

It just sucks because I absolutely hate people working on the car with things like that. Scratches, scuffs etc. etc. always seem to happen but what can you do?

Anyways just venting to the community.

Windshield damage like that is chance, and chance doesn't care if you replaced your windshield last week, last year (as was the case on our X5 with a recent chip) or you just took delivery of your new X5. These are vehicles, we use them in harm's way.

It's not just chance--people drive in drastically varying conditions and there are certainly varying qualities and applications of windshields. I have about 30k miles on my '23 and the windshield cracked at 1500 miles and has gotten another chip in it since then.

Each of my other cars have about 75k miles on them now and have never had a broken windshield. There certainly seems to be a lot more broken windshield threads on the G05 forum than any other car forum I've visited over the years.

Yep. I've heard the same on the G80 forum. Wonder if glass is softer or something?

On my 2022 M50i, I went through two windshields in a 3k mile span. On my 2023 X5MC, just went 30k miles with not even a chip, just luck (or lack thereof)...drive the exact same roads with both vehicles.

On my 2016 X5 I was on my 4th windshield in 5 years!! Geico loved me because I always insisted on OEM Glass due to the HUD. They fought me every time. It was all due to lovely I-4 here in Orlando! There is always construction or construction trucks dropping stuff that always seemed to find my windshield. ugh

I had my car less than two weeks when a rock bounced on the highway and put a very small dent along with a couple small scratches on my hood.

Any damage sucks.

Either the manufacture of - or the angle/design - but these windshields are subpar when compared to previous X5 series. On my 2nd/soon to be 3rd in 42k miles/3 year ownership.

I purchased my 2021 G05 in August 2024. I drove 4 hrs to trade in my 2016 X5 for it. About 2-3 days later I have a tiny crack in windshield on bottom right. It hasn't got any bigger. A month later hit a rabbit and broke lower radiator shudders. Wish shudders didn't come with these vehicles. Absolutely pointless imo.

Will changing the windscreen have any side effect? After all is not factory fitted. Thanks.

I've had the windshield replaced twice on a previous F15 X5 and twice on my current G05 X5 by Safelite, with a BMW branded windshield.

The only side effect was with the most recent installation when a rain sensor error would appear when using intermittent wipers. Safelite replaced the sensor under warranty and issue was resolved.

Better to have a chip in your windshield than a big chunk out of your paintwork. When mine was new I stayed a healthy distance from dump trucks - didn't work, I got tagged by one going in the opposite direction

It stinks, but it's just luck. I had an E60 that went 175k miles and still had the original windshield. (The last couple years I was hoping for a good crack so I could get it replaced under insurance. No luck.) Then I had an F30 and in 4 years, 65k miles it went through 5 windshields. The first was a month after I bought it.

I had the G05 windshield replaced last January. Got BMW glass with no argument from insurance. Everything has been fine since.

I feel your pain back in 2023 my wife’s X5 had two windscreens in month, followed by my X5 2 weeks later.

I do think they are not very resistant to stone chips but in fairness our UK roads are crap!

Just part exchanged my 50e and the windscreen was so pitted!!

Glass isn’t what it used to be. I treat all mine with C-Bond. Hope it helps and I do many cross country trips.

I think it's pretty clear by this thread that plenty of people have suffered windshield blues and many that have suffered multiple replacements on the same vehicle.

No fun for sure but still seems like a high percentage of replacements. I wonder if vehicles from say 20 or 30 years ago experienced as much damage.

In the end not much, we can do but get them fixed and move on.

Whatever y’all do…..insist on OEM replacement windshield. I have zero deductible windshield replacement coverage and St Farm wanted to use an aftermarket windshield in my 2020 Audi. I and the Safelite rep insisted on OEM and St Farm finally agreed.

Yeah, if we're paying the extra premium for full glass we better get original stuff. Always trying to cheap out these companies are.

Replaced once and I have a chip on my new one that I patched myself. I am so worried about it spreading that I have adhesive applied on it for an extra layer.

They sell some windshield clear tints for protection against chips. I watched a YT video of someone comparing 3 types and one held up pretty good.

Maybe that is a solution

And if your windshield is tinted it has to be redone also. Another trip to a shop and depending where you are (traveling) it can be a hassle. When you get used to tinting not having it is a… well, first world problem. Couple years ago my S Class windshield cracked and USAA paid for the tint also.
