Someone talk me out of this upgrade. X5 40i to 50i

Hi everyone. I’m looking for some advice. So I previously owned a 2018 M2 base which I LOVED; however, my son was getting into travel sports so I decided to trade it in for a family hauler. A year ago I decided to finance a 2023 X5 x40i, thinking that it would be sufficient enough for my needs but now I'm regretting not getting the 50i version. I miss the growl and acceleration. There's a used, low mileage, 2023 50i at my dealership right now and my heart wants to jump ship and upgrade, but upgrading now would be a silly financial decision since I still owe about $15k in my finance. The dealer is giving me $43K for the trade in and the 50i costs $73k. Has anyone done this short term upgrade? Should I just mod my 40i for now and wait until I drive it a few more years? Is upgrading now a big financial hit?

Thanks for reading about my first world problem.

Obviously it is not the best financial decision to make but if your criteria was making the best financial decisions you would be driving a Kia or Toyota. I have seen people swap brand new vehicles in less time so you wouldn't be the first to regret a purchase. If the extra expense is not gong to hurt your financial solution then go for it. If finances are a bit tight then learn to live with what you have until things loosen up.

Thanks! I can spare the expense but I’m just wondering if I am way overpaying for just a bigger engine. For background, the dealer is offering me $43k for the trade in and I have $15k left of that finance so I have $28k in equity. So if the 50i costs $73k, minus the trade in and plus the payoff amount, with taxes it comes out to be around $49k without any additional down payment. In my mind, i think I’m paying $15k plus whatever down payment just to have a larger engine and some extra options.

Sounds like you are paying 30k for the bigger engine. The B58 in the 40i is pretty strong. You are asking for opinions here, and personally I think that sounds like a silly upgrade. I'd at least want a newer vehicle with longer warranty for that much extra cash.

I have a M60i with 18 mo and 19k miles under my belt. I love it but if I was ordering now id probably go with 40i XDrive. There’s no place to drive the 8 banger like it’s meant to be driven. Sure I can outrun the occasional Porsche Cayenne or similar but in reality I don’t need that thrill anymore. The B58 has plenty of giddyup and go. I like unique cars but unless one’s budget allows for a Lambo, Ferrari, Bentley or similar nothing is truly unique these days. Neither my budget nor my wife allow that.

Why not hit a compromise? for that much financial bath, look at a 2025 40i, you get that new car smell, 3 years of worry free warranty and more space that you had before. The inline 6 has plenty of power, and saves you a little bit in gas.
Having said that, only you would know how much this additional expenditure is going to affect your finances.

The warranty is 4yr/50k miles, and the free basic maintenance is 3yr/36k miles in the US.

This was my exact thought process when deciding between the v8 and v6 earlier this year. I LOVED everything about the M60i, but I was pleasantly surprised when I drove the 40i. It was clear that the B58 would provide more than enough oomph to give me thrill and enjoyment in my daily driving, and I couldn't justify the extra cost for what would likely amount to a few cups of extra dopamine over the course of 5-7 years of ownership.

I had issues with my n63 motor. I had new ‘23 m550 which shares the same motor with the m50s. But out of the gate within 7k miles I had coolant issues and it just never went away. I ended up trading it in this year and getting a ‘25 x5 m60.

If I were to upgrade to the v8 I’d go with the newer s68. I have 0 issues as of now. *knock on wood*

And to haul the family around I’m confident the 40i is plenty powerful, but the v8 does make you smile a lot.

I have a 40i, and not have had a chance to push the engine at all due to traffic and road conditions where I live. I can’t imagine having the V8. I would be I trouble really quick

Thanks! I appreciate this point of view. I drive a lot of highway miles and I love to tear up the on-ramps. The M2 was a BLAST! I miss it so that's why I'm considering the V8. But like you said, there aren't too many places where you can unleash the full power of the V8. I've decided to stick with the B58 and hope that my wife's Honda takes a crap in a couple of years so she can take this car and I get myself a 911 lol

I know what you mean. I did take a look but the touch screen bothers me. I need physical buttons. There's enough distractions as it is and I don't want to touch the screen to change my vent settings.

I'm sure the sound of the cold-start makes you smile everyday! That's what I miss (not my neighbors though).

Don't think that's a good decision to make honestly. Maybe save up a bit more cash and go balls out with a '26 m60i or something (unless they discontinue the V8s next year).

That's a good strategy. Only problem is that Hondas aren't likely to take a dump! Might want to think about plan B.
