Success! Berk Technology 135i Time Attack ..

Our 3 week build time for the Berk Technology 1er has finally come to fruition!

Youtube Video:

High res full download here:
Video (right click, save as)

We just got back from Day 1 of the Redline Time Attack at Autoclub Speedway. There was a heavy turnout for today's event. Lots of heavy hitters showed up for the event. The event is a who's who of the performance industry, and this was only a practice day. Expect a few more bad asses to show up for raceday tomorrow.

To sum up how we got here. We added the 135i to our home fleet as a nice daily driver. We didn't have any plans to do much to it, but fell in love with the car and decided to turn it into our next street/race car. We needed to turn a 100% stock car into a street and roadcourse pounding machine.... in 3 weeks. With the help of a lot of people and our own sweat, we did it!

The car performed superbly without any problems the entire day. We're having the normal growing pains which are 100% expected when you are developing a brand new chassis and doing things that haven't been done before. The only real "problem" we're having is correct tire selction aka rubbing issues.

Without much further ado, here are some of the pictures from the event. Big thank you to TrackHQ.com and Motorsportlens.com for the awesome shots. More pictures and in car videos to follow from our own setup.

We pitted in the garage with European Motor Works. A great group of track junkies. The owner John Handal knows his stuff.

Things changed from last week's shake down at Buttonwillow CA.
1. Switched to Toyo R1R 255/35/18 front, no more rubbing. Switched to Hankook RS2's 265/35/18 rear. Very slight rubbing.

Some more data on the wheel/tire fitment on these cars that are stock bodied. The 265/35/18 Hankook RS2's were rubbing in the rear. Due to the higher cornering forces going 146mph on the oval J.Tyler was able to compress the suspension more on the right side of the car (CCW track day). So we thought, let's switch to a 255/40/18 Neova in the rear. Should clear right? 10mm narrower right? WRONG! These Neova's just aren't very forgiving when you try to stuff more rubber under there! So with these particular wheels (D-Force EmPower 18x8.5 +43) the square shoulders of the Neova's just won't work at 255 or 265. A 245 "should" work, but then again, I was sure the 255 would work as well.

2. Really seeing how much of a difference a real diff would make. Really contemplating this mod more now. Every car needs one, but it's just not in the budget right now. The tire budget, ah hem, "balloned" and we just have to work with what we have right now.

Take a look at how much inside tire smoke we're laying down. A diff would take care of that. It's safe to say that Jeff laid down a track, not tracks.

Some more pictures....

Looking sharp with the V-Fiber side skirts. These are a prototype set, but they will be producing the full body kit/lip kit in the coming months. You can also see our engine bay here. 100% stock motor except for the Berk Technology Turbo Back exhaust & Burger O2 sims.

Thank you to our sponsors and our crew and those helping hands that make these cars tick. This 3 week build couldn't be done without you guys/girls!

Thank you to our sponsors who make the car possible.

V-Fiber
KW Suspensions
Burger Motorsports
Nate & Mike from Gruppe-S Engineering
City Tire Service
and last but not least the Berk Technology team!! Go Berk!!

Head over to trackhq.com and see all of the pictures from the event. LOTS of cool pics over there.

More pictures and the in car video's to follow tomorrow. Gotta get some rest now.....

nice write-up and pictures - keep em coming!
Do you think it'd be work taking the sound proofing off the underside of the bonnet to try and keep temps down?

The car ran exceptoinally well this weekend. With the support of the dedicated team at Berk Technology and the talented skills of J.Tyler driving we had a strong finish.

As I said before, the KW V3's are VERY capable suspension. Our fastest lap of the day was 2:00.312, almost a 2 minute flat. Considering the minimal mods that are on the car I would consider the car downright blazing fast. There are no fancy custom mods on the car, no uber expensive exotic parts, no ECU mods, no intake mod, no intercooler mods, no custom suspension componets.

The ER 135i was in our same street RWD class. They looked very good out there as well. They were faster than us by just a bit, they ended up running a 1:59.996. We're under powered and under tired vs. their 135i, so we're all still happy with the times we were able to run. They're running a custom KW Clubsport setup on their car.

Here's another awesome shot from Aaron at Motorsportlens.com

The mod list is surprisingly short. Performance mods are:

-Berk Technology turbo back exhaust w/ dual cats
-VFiber Side skirts
-KW Variant 3 coilovers w/ Vorshlag camber plates
-H&R rear sway bar only
-Burger Motorsports O2 sims
-Hawk HT-10 pads w/ Motul Fluid
-Sparco seats & harness bar
-D-Force EmPower wheels
-Toyo R1R 255/35/18 front, Yokoham Advan Neova's 255/40/18 rear tires

Other mods we've done that aren't really performance related:

-BMW Shadowline front grills
-BMW floor mats
-BMW oil change @ 900 miles
-Lots of Turtle Wax ICE & Liquid Clay bar

Some more photos from the day.

Photo finish at 145mph.

Going neck and neck with the 600HP SC'ed Corvette

Okay, so maybe we didn't out run the vette...

Coming in hard through the infield.

Is there a place where we can check out the results so we can compare your times to what some other cars are running?

Hi Chris,

We are running D-Force EmPower.

18x8.5 +40 front. Have tried the following tire combos: Advan Nevoa 255/40/18 - rubs. Toyo R1R 255/35/18, no rub!

18x9.5 +43 rear - Have tried the following tire combos: Hankook Z212 265/35/18, rubs under hard cornering. Advan Neova 255/40/18 - rubs BADLY. Worse than the 265 hankook because of the square shoulder the Neova has vs. the round shoulder the Hankook has.

We would really like to have a plug and play 255 front, 275 rear tire setup, but this will require a manufacturer to step up and make us a 1 series specific wheel. The offsets are unusually high for this car and an off the shelf wheel does not exist yet.

If you get a chance, please see this post we made to try and spur some interest to get this done. If you have a sec cast your vote.
