Exclamation Two driver issues

My wife and I both use our 2024 BMW X5 xDrive40i.

However, when we get in, the phone it connects to for phone, music, and/or Android Auto is a crapshoot. It usually connects to the wrong one, and we have to manually disconnect it in order for it to pick up the right one.

When I'm driving (and it's on my BMW profile), I want it to use my phone. When she's driving (and it's on her BMW profile), it should use hers. The car is smart enough to change the seats, the climate controls, etc., per profile... why can't it change the phone it's connected to?

Well, we had a "one-on-one technology clinic" with the tech person at the dealership today to ask our questions. The "tech" lady said that we need to remove the phone we don't want from the system, and that change will only affect the current profile. She also said we can change the "telephone priority" to prefer her phone in her profile, and my phone in my profile.

However, we proved to her that these things are global settings, i.e., not per-profile, i.e., changing these things in one profile persists in the other profile.

Then, she said all BMWs behave this way. Okay, clearly she didn't know this before, stated it worked differently than it does, and lied that she knew how it worked in the first place, or she's lying now.

Are all BMWs this way? Where, if my wife's phone was connected last time, and her phone (and herself) are in the car with me, and it's on my profile, I will need to manually disconnect her phone in order for it to pick up my phone?

Is our BMW broken, or are all BMWs broken in this way?

Thanks!!

What you described, has been the way my MY22 as well. Two phones, two drivers, it never works correctly. I have seen remove mine from the car because wife is the primary user. It is normal for bmw? Apparently yes. Is it right? Absolutely no. Other brands I have owned, don’t do this.

It can get confusing when BOTH of you are getting into the vehicle with their fobs, based on which one is recognized first.

As an experiment, you could try putting the fob in a Faraday bag (or wrap it in aluminum foil) and see if it reacts the same way since then, it would only 'see' one fob.

Note, depending on the proximity of the 'other' fob may be close enough in the house that the vehicle 'saw' it before you walked up to it, especially if it gets moved around to wake it up.

bruh, you have a tendency to ramble on but not address the issue at hand. don’t get me wrong; you do provide good technical info when on point, though. that said, I suggest you re-read the original post

He said when 'we' get in...so it's likely both fobs were in the equation.

my wife has owned bimmers since 2008. while they were her DD, I was (still am) the more technically savvy one. when I finally got my own bimmer late 2020, I discovered more of the intricate complexities of these vehicles with 2 drivers especially when things started becoming more “connected” with cloud-based storage. we have two bimmers so imagine figuring out the kinks (she’s priority in her vehicle; I’m priority in mine, etc)

I’ve found the phone priority setting doesn’t work as intended, no matter which driver profile it’s programmed under. the only “workaround” was to have the priority phone enter the vehicle first. same goes for driver profile (though not your current issue): whichever driver profile is to be loaded, the associated key should enter the vehicle first, though I discovered the easy way to load the correct profile even if entering the vehicle afterwards

I also think BMW could do these things better, but I’m sure for them it’s just easier to build upon the programming that’s already been in place
