Trim Around Sideview Mirrors?

I've got the Sport package w/ Shadowline trim; not sure if this applies to the other option. I noticed while detailing my car that the black plastic bezel that surrounds the mirror almost looks as if its not pushed in all the way. There's about a 2-3mm gap where it appears like the bezel should slide further into the mirror housing.

I noticed it on my car right away as the dealer had caked about a half bottle of wax in there while prepping it. Has anyone else noticed this?

If I understand you correctly, I believe this gap is necessary to allow the mirrors to fold in and out - see the owners manual, p.43 (p.52 w.iDrive).

No, this goes for the non-folding mirrors as well. It's the black trim aft of the colored mirror skin. I have noticed this as well.

Here is a quick pic I took of the gap on the mirror trim.

Right, I didn't understand the OP correctly. Looks like that is simply the design. Although the gap widens significantly on the bottom, it's still still perfectly sealed in terms of protection from water.

All the mirrors have the gap. It's part of the design of the mirror. What purpose does the gap serve ? Your guess is as good as mine.

I went to the garage and checked it out and I have it too. I wonder if this might be the cause of the infamous whistling noise

Where did you purchase from? I'm leasing mine from Tulley, and I already told them not to buff or wax it.
