Z5pro on metallic paint
I've got a Black Sapphire Metallic 135i. I have had the car professionally detailed to remove all the swirl marks. Paint looks great.
I am now about to apply Zaino. I've got both the Z5 and Z2 and was going to apply 2 costs of Z5 and then 2-3 coats of z2. The detailer recommended not to use Z5 as it mutes metallic paint. He suggested I only apply Z2. Any thoughts? |

I can't verify that Z5 mutes metallic paint, but I've always used Z2 in the past with great success. Tried Z5 the past two times and I've had nothing but a struggle...more difficult to remove, less "deep" shine, and apparent splotching in low light conditions. May have just been me this time around, but I'm going back to Z2 only with Z-PC for any swirls.

Personnally, if you just had your car detailed, I wouldn't apply Z5 as it is a swirl remover... better go with Z2 and remember, less is better !

a couple weeks ago i did 2 coats Z5 and 3 coats Z2, and my BSM pops! you can see the flake from far away, and it looks absolutely fantastic. but if your paint is perfect after the detail, i don't see a need to do Z5... save it for when some swirls show up.

^^ Yes, your first coat should be either Z-2 or Z-5 mixed with ZFX or a plain coat of Z-AIO.
Also, be sure to use Z-6* after your first application of Z-2 or Z-5 and before and after each subsequent application. it really does help in the application process and my results have been nothing more than stunning. As for Z-5 vs Z-2... honestly I really didn't see too much of a difference. I applied many coats of Z-5 before I started using Z-2 and you can definitely tell the difference using Z-2 over Z-5, but I am not sure if that is due to the Z-2 or the fact I have so many coats of it on my car. Or the fact I have SGM and not JB or BSM. Also, many years ago when i first started using Zaino the common perception was "the mroe coats, the better" and even though people say differently now, I still think each coat gives a better and deeper shine. I'm at over 20 and I tell you the car looks magnificent. *Zaino recommends not putting on Z-8 until the coat has cured, about 4-6 hours with ZFX. After a rush one morning of Z-2ing with an immediate Z-8 I can honestly say that is good advice. Z-8 should be used only when you really need the extra shine and never right after a coat of Z-2 or Z-5. |

Your detailer could be right about avoiding Z-5 on light metallic paint colors...
The sticky in the detailing forum at e90post recommends Z-5 Pro for dark colors and Z-2 Pro for light colors. Technically, they are both sealants instead of polishes, but the added function of Z-5 Pro is hiding most swirls. I've personally applied Z-5 Pro (w/o ZFX) to my SGM with fantastic results. It is rather addicting to use because the visual depth, clarity, gloss, and shine improves after each subsequent coat (I've done three so far and waiting for a chance to do the next). Applying it is very easy: you simply wipe on, let it haze, and then buff off with a dry towel. To test if it's ready to be buffed off, just wipe with a finger--if it doesn't streak, then it's ready. Some users may have difficulty in using it because too much is applied. It must applied very sparingly. Only about half an ounce is necessary to cover the entire car. I have not used Z-2 Pro, but I've read about others having great results using it in conjunction with Z-5 Pro. Since you have BSM, I believe Z-5 Pro is a necessity! |

I use z2 on my TiAg and it works really well with this in mind, I usually do 3-4 layers. The biggest tip on Zaino is already given, use it sparingly. There is a reason why I do 3-4 coats to make sure every part of the car is covered. Using too much will give the undesired result of residue and the added effort to remove the wax after it dries.
