Opinions on 135i ride quality and low rpm torque

Hi Everyone,

Would just like to introduce myself as a new member to the forum.

I currently have an E90 330d M Sport and am thinking of changing to a 135i coupe. I have not as yet had a test drive (trying to arrange) in the 135i but have driven the 123d M Sport.

One thing I have found on with the 330d M Sport is that the suspension is very firm (spine jarring due to the 18" RFT tyres) on typical UK 'A' or 'B' roads although the road holding and feedback is superb.

I would welcome some feedback on the ride quality of the 135i coupe on typical UK roads. Is the 135i much firmer that the 123d M Sport and is it comparable to the E90 330d M Sport.

Is there much turbo lag on the 135i especially at low rpm and how torquey is the engine at low rpm.
The 330d does to me suffer from turbo lag at low rpm until the turbo spins up.

Thanks in advance.
MoonTech.

hitting a pothole in the 135 feels like hitting a wall sometimes. i have popped a tire and bent a rim from a tiny pothole.

there is turbo lag, although some don't have it, i can link you to a thread with a ton of people that DO have it. It's there untill 3,000 rpm. Although the 09 people are saying its only there till 2,000rpm.

I don't think it's too bad in the 135i, even with the dreadded run-flats. Ok hitting a pothole is a bit of a bone shaker but then again these are low profile tyres so what do you expect. On the whole I find it very comfortable considering the sports suspension setup. I have never driven 330d so couldn't compare it.

i had a 120d before the 135i, and where the 135i is definitely a lot faster, it doenst have that initial 'shove' that the diesel does around 2k revs or somewhere (cant quite remember). It is really torquey, just not as torquey as your 330d, but when you get to 3k - 3.5k revs it goes like a bast*rd!

hope this helps!

Agree with esscolab. I think it's pretty good in general.

It does crash over potholes a bit, but I've driven down some poor rutted B-roads and it's been fine for me. It's possibly a bit more fidgety than I'd like, but not excessively so, and having been a hot hatch fan I kind of like that skittishness to a certain extent.

More than anything, I just find the run flats a little noisy on bad surfaces

According to specs the 135i has the M-sport suspension as standard. (It says in the brochure).

So it should be just as firm as the 123d M.

Thanks for the valued feedback everyone.

I will see how the test drive in the 135i goes. That will be the deciding factor.

The low down torque of the 123d M Sport was very impressive, no turbo lag, which is as I understand it the main advantage of the twin turbo sequential setup.

The 135i is very very tractable - it'll happily pull from 30mph in 6th gear, which is under 1000rpm. Obviously it's not flying at this point, but there isn't the sort of lack of grunt you'd get from say a 118d or 120d if you caught it completely off the torque band.

I think a lot of people confuse "not having maximum thrust at lower rpm" with lag. I don't find the 135i particularly laggy at all, and I certainly don't think it's fair to say there is nothing going on below 3k.

Comparing it to the "2k shove" in a diesel doesn't make sense either, because of the difference in the gearing. 2k is of course about 40% of the available revs, which equates to about 3k in the 135i - exactly where everyone agrees the power is really coming in.

I've owned 535d, 500bhp twin-scroll Audi TT, B5 twin-turbo Audi RS4 in recent years. Although the 135i isn't the fastest (the RS4 easily takes that honour) the engine is probably the all-round most satisfying. Sure, the 535d had loads of low-down grunt (even more so with the DMS remap) but it didn't have the top end excitement of the 135i. The RS4 had a never-ending surge of power up to the limiter, but it was quite possible to catch it completely off-boost. The 135i offers a great mix of capabilities in my opinion, even in light of those great cars.

Hi Moontec
I owned an E92 before my 135i, the E92 came with 18's from the factory on M sport suspension, I changed to 19's soon after picking the car up.

The 19's made very little difference over the 18's and I say the 135i is a softer ride to the E92 on both 18's and 19's

We own both a 335d Coupe with M Sport suspension and on 19"s and a 135i M Sport.

The 135i is a dream over bumps in direct comparison.

The 335d is a nightmare and really should not be run on 19"s, they are all show and no go.

Still, the 135i is still harsh compared to my old S2000, and does irritate.

The RFT's are totally crap too and provide very poor traction, even in the dry!

Until this weekend, I didn't think that was true, but having had my first bit of 'tail out action' rather unexpectedly, I'd have to agree. Thank god for the computer on board which corrected it quicker than I did!!
As for the ride, I think it's pretty good - better (for me) than my A3-Sline was.

I've not had any traction problems with the RFTs at all so far. I've only seen TC flash once when accelerating hard up an undulating winding hill and going over a wet drain cover.

I've not tried launching it yet but I've not really found them wanting so far.

Maybe I'm just down on power compared to everyone else's 135i?!

On the whole, once the RFT's have been warmed up or on a warm day they are okay. But when cold, wet, or on a crappy road they are seriously poor.

I tend to notice it more in town and generally out of lights when I need to change lanes or dispatch with a Focus ST

Unfortunately my car is leased, so no hope of them letting me change to non-RFT's, but I am going to try.
