Did I get ripped off? Lease purchase add ons
I just purchased out my 2023 m340i ~25k miles 3y lease no accidents at the lease end. I ended up getting talked into buying the maintenance package (ultimate care+ 2) for 3249$.. they said it was at a discounted price at the time of purchase of the car and it would be more expensive later
And regarding the warranty since the factory warranty was going to expire in a year, they said BMW doesn’t offer an official extended warranty and I got talked into the United Car Care Extended warranty for 48m/30k miles starting now. I got charged $5433.00 for this. I still have a year of factory warranty remaining.. Then I read online that BMW does offer an extended warranty 7 years/100k miles? Is this true? Did they lie to me? I read that I have 30-60 days to cancel. Last edited by Plsfoldthx; 10-12-2025 at 11:49 PM.. |

Based on your posting, I think you were lied to twice. I would have to assume they probably also jacked up the price. I would cancel and look at other choices.

Before ever purchasing an extended warranty it is important to take into consideration how your car has been. If it has been problem free vs. many problems. Generally speaking a car that is generally problem free continues that way and vice versa a car with problems tends to continue with problems. Finally before ever purchasing an extended warranty, you must shop around. There is a huge profit margin in extended warranty. Unlike a car with many variables there are few with an extended warranty: term and deductible and where you car can be serviced. If you decide to get a warranty, I have found that the best warranties are from the manufacturer as opposed to third party warranty. Hopes this does not upset but helps! Buying out the lease. They probably upsold you on the extras, but on the other hand, you don’t appear to know anything about cars and can’t DIY. BMWs out of warranty can be scary in terms of the cost of maintenance and repairs. The OP took care of his concerns for about $8500 for 3 years.
Would I do that? No. Have I ever bought prepaid maintenance? Yes, twice. Have I ever bought an extended warranty? Not directly, but I have bought 3 CPO BMW though I would no longer ascribe any value to one since the extra warranty decreased from 2 years to 1 year. If the OP knew what he was doing, he could look for an independent BMW shop that could likely take care of him for ownership years 4-7 for less than $8500. But you never know for sure. There are scary anecdotal reports out there of even more expensive failures. Fortunately for me, I am a DIYer. It is possible that all my tool purchases may pay off before I pass away. For the most part I am having fun in the meantime though the exhaust I just fixed on the 2012 X3 that gave to a niece took much much longer than expected. She backed into a granite block and bent the exhaust just before the muffler so I had to cut out the bent section and weld in a new piece with just the right angle. A muffler shop probably could have done it in less that 2 hours for $300…. |

Did the F&I criminal at least have the common courtesy to give you a “free” reach-around? You were brutalized.

I just picked up that the extended warranty is only 30k miles. It looks like the OP drives less than 10k miles per year, but $5500 for an extra 3 years and 30k of warranty seems like a lot.

BMWs don't cost any more to maintain or repair than any other vehicle. BMW oil & filter on my M vehicles is $116 shipped. Spark Plugs $109 shipped. Even if OP doesn't know how to DIY those maintenance items, they shouldn't cost much at all ($100 oil changes & $250 spark plugs), so $550 in maintenance over the next 3 years. My BMW dealer advertises $225 brake fluid service. Now he's at $775. If he maintained his vehicle well during the lease, it's highly unlikely he will have any mechanical breakdowns that cost him over $7,500 out of pocket. Maintenance plans are for people who would be going to the dealer for everything anyway. It is just what some people do. It certainly covers servicing, which varies in cost from dealer to dealer. The guy who lives in SF is paying more than the guy who lives in a much less expensive area. The maintenance plan may also cover consumables the warranty does not cover line brakes but you would have to check the terms. If I could not DIY, I would be using a good independent shop. I would not buy a maintenance plan. |

If I was in the DIFM segment, and I was buying out one of BMWs twin turbo V8 cars I might opt for the warranty even at that price.
But, the B58 I6T car has a good reliable track record and you know it's history. I'd cancel and just go out of pocket for repairs moving forward.
