Hey everyone - I just bought a 2020 M8 Competition Convertible. I did a couple of software updates via the My BMW app to get to version "11/2023.50" Are there any updates available that are newer than this? The self update mechanism says no, but I want to double check.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a place where you can check software versions online (not in the app)? When I google for it, I get a BMW link where I can allegedly put in my VIN (https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html). When I try this, I just get redirected to a general info page (https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html). Did they remove the functionality to check via the web?

Don't expect much with regards to BMW's software updates. They're infrequent, opaque, and largely undocumented. So far as I'm aware there's really no way to definitively tell what the most current version of iDrive for your car actually is, so you're stuck with people anecdotally reporting what they have on forums like this. Even when the MyBMW app or the car tells you you're running the latest version, that may not really be true – you'll see people post more recent version numbers for the exact same car. Release notes, such as they are, are largely useless – they're of the "we've made improvements" variety, rather than actually telling you the specifics of any changes.
Legacy auto manufacturers are car companies that happen to make software, rather than newer manufacturers tending to be software companies that happen to make cars. While it'd be nice to have more robust software development and deployment, I'll take the manufacturer actually being good at making cars seven days a week and twice on Sunday, rather than the other way around a la Tesla, etc. |
