auto at the drag strip...

I am thinking about taking my step to the strip... anyone have any suggestions or experience with the traction control...

Should I turn off DSC/DTC completely? Just turn on DTC? Leave DSC on??...

I am thinking without disabling DSC if I lose traction the control will kick in and slow me down (or screw with the shifting if using DS mode and shifting gears)... So I would think disabling both DSC/DTC is the way to go...

Any thoughts??

Yes... I want to go get some 1/4 mile times...

My question is if I do a run and use the steptronic to shift if I should keep the DSC on? (b/c I know when it kicks in now b/c you lost traction it shifts automatically to keep you under control)

Put it in DS and let it rip, and turn of DSC and DTC so that you get the e-lsd and dont have the computer drop the engine rpm.

Don't let any haters haze you about your automatic, with similar driving skill, you will be faster 9 out of 10 times, and it hurts their ego. I respect the fun and purity of a manual, why don't you manual drivers acknowledge the benifits and capabilities of an automatic, especially on as good as the 135i's.

^^^ Thanks for the tip... I had a manual toyota for the past 4 years but have never been to the strip b/c it just didnt seem worth it only having 160 HP... now with this twin turbo I wanna give it a shot (but now I have the auto which I actually appreciate a lot)...

Plus I have driven cars with steptronic shifting before and they are all a joke compared to the 135

pressing and holding he DSC for 4-5 seconds turns off the tractions control and turns off the rev limiter... You will get better 1/4 times with TC off.

Would you advise then just gunning it DS mode with traction control off letting the car shift itself?? Or manually shift using the the stick or paddles?

Let it shift itself in DS mode the first couple of passes until you get comfortable with the whole staging/launching process - then see if you can get better times using the paddles (remember you'll get best times shifting a bit below redline in 3rd and fourth - which should be all the car needs to get through the quarter mile). Roll your rear tires slowly through the waterbox then torque brake it and do a smokey burnout. Bring it to the tree, stage and torque brake it and rev it a bit (you'll need to make a few passes to find optimum RPM for launch).

And - you absolutely are better off with an automatic at a drag strip BTW.

Good luck and post results (we want to see time slips!!!! ; -).

Here's a couple of links you may want to peek at:

http://www.nhra.com/basics/basics.html

http://www.staginglight.com/guide/react.html

And practice your reaction times on the 'Sportsman Tree' (which is what the amateurs use):

Hold the brake with the left foot and gas it with the right. If you do it right the car won't move forward but just spin the rear tires. It works, once you get the hang of it, you can lay impressive amounts of rubber on a street. ; -)

. . . not if you don't get your thumbs in the way . . . ; -)

Sorry that's a punch line to an old-old-old joke about 'blocking' a camel.

Does it hurt anything? Yeah probably a bit of additional wear and tear on the rear brakes and tranny. But it is effective when you want to launch the car.

The fastest drag cars are automatics.

This may be a dumb question (and even kind of unsanitary haha)... but do they have loaner or rental helmets at most tracks??

Are you kidding???

The fastest 135i 1/4 mile run recorded was with an auto...
