debadging - how to remove glue residue?

I'm thinking about debadging my car tomarow, did some research on this site, and figured that the best way was to use a hair drier, and some dental floss, the only problem is i don't have any goo gone to remove the adhesive glue, does anyone know anything else i can use to remove the glue?

when I put on my shadow emblems there wasn't THAT much risidual adhesive left, your finger nail and some soap and water will probably do the trick. But goo gone isn't that expensive and at least you'll have it on hand if you ever need it

3M adhesive remover also works, it's much cleaner than googone which can leave a greasy feel. BE SURE TO NOT OVERHEAT THE BADGE!!! I'd also wax the area after you debadge. Just a little fyi.

I used rubbing alcohol and cotton balls and some cleaner wax after that.

A little 3M rubbing compound on a hand-towel will get all the residue off with about 10 seconds of brisk rubbing.

Are there alignment holes that need plugged after the removal?

Nope... they are just held on with basic 2-sided foam tape. Takes 5 minutes, max.

I took off the 135i today and put on black ones. It was not real warm and there was no sun, so it was a bit of work. I didn't apply heat because I was using masking tape to mark where the original numbers were and I didn't want to risk messing that up, so it was a real pain getting the adhesive off. Goo-gone didn't do much for me, and so I resorted to some carefully applied WD-40. But I bet heat would have made a difference.

Best thing to use is more tape. Yes i said tape. Packaging tape is best. Just stick the tape to the residue and rub with your fingers to heat it a bit then slowly peel off. once you have the heavy part off, dab at the residue with the packaging tape pulling striaght back (don't peel) in a quick motion. It takes a bit but works everytime. Always use a fresh area on the tape to get best removal of residue.

I'm missing something: why do people remove the badge? Anti-status? Aesthetics?

Just use "Tarminator" spray. It's meant for road tar and bugs but it's safe on painted surfaces. I used that when I debaged my STI. Worked beautifully and cleaned the surface as well.

I'm taking mine off for the nice clean look it provides. The only badge you'll see on the back of mine is the BMW roundel.

Aesthetics mostly. I think it looks much cleaner without a tag on one side of the back. I debadged my last 3 series (it was much more popular to do it back then) and I think I'll debadge my 135i. If I eventually do get an M3, I'll debadge that as well!

Just debadge my car, worked out pretty well, had some trouble removing the glue residue, i used my finger nails, and a sponge, wasn't thinking, and it was definetly not a good idea, dont know why i did that. But after i use some soap wax, and WD40 to finish off it came out good, but i probably need to buy some goo gone to finish it off later.

bimmian.com Check out the cosmetic forum and you should be able to find some threads on it with pics. The black matches the shadowline trim.
