I have about 1100 miles on the car.. when should I do the first oil change? I have seen recommedations at 1500.. and before the scheduled one.

M cars they recommend first oil change with diff fluid and trans fluid change at 1200 (aka break in service), and then next one is 15K. For me, I usually do this:

1500 --> 5000 --> 10000 --> 15000 --> then every 7500 or so

I would change it as soon as you can. I usually do the first one early ~1k. After that, every 3k or 3 months, whichever is soonest. You can always send your oil in for analysis after your first few changes to find your optimal interval since it depends on how often and how hard you drive.

I did my first at 3000, now i just stick to the schedule. The oil was less dirty at 15k than I thought it would be. Must be a decent OE filter.
