Question About Springfield MA
Hey guys. I may need to relocate to Springfield MA for a bit due to this economy. I just have a few questions:
1. Is it safe for our cars? 2. Can you recommend a place to live around the area that is decent? Thanks again. Any input is appreciated. |

Hey man, as with most cities, there are good and bad sections. While I've seen some nice and safe neighborhoods over by Springfield College and around that area, Springfield has a lot of pretty Bad sections and would not be the greatest area to have a nice BMW. I've heard of and Seen many cases of wheels and cars being jacked in and around the city but thats a risk you're gonna take moving to any city I suppose. Do some research before you move there to see what areas to avoid. In terms of road quality, if you have a nice set of wheels, be careful on a lot of the major side-roads cause there tends to be a lottt of Potholes in the city from the harsh winter weather they get out there, but the majority of the highway roads are fine. Hope this helped. Good luck.

I was wondering if you can recommend a place to live around the area that is better? 20-30 min commute is okay. |

Pass on Springfield itself, there are plenty of nice towns in the area but Springfield isn't the nice small city of the past (and that's putting it very nicely). It's really not a fantastic place, even most residents will tell you this.
Check out the North/South/West Hampton, Amherst, Pelham, Hadley or even Worcester areas. Largely depends on your budget and willingness to commute of course. Sixteen Acres in Springfield is probably one of the nicer parts of the city.

no offense to any springfield residents, but it's consider ghetto in some areas

Springfield is not the best place to live. Like someone else mentioned...I would move to another town close to there if that's where you are going to be working.

To give you a perspective of how bad Springfield is in terms of real estate, my buddies dad bought a 2 family house 10 - 15 years ago and sold it a couple years ago and got less or equal to what he initially paid.
best option is to live outside of springfield. try looking for places like westfield, wilbraham, ludlow, agawam (home of six flags MA), longmeadow, palmer, or amherst. BTW, there's a BMW dealership in West Springfield, BMW of WS. Good Luck on your search.

Thanks for all the great input. This section of the forum rocks. If I posted this in any of the other sections they would have flammed right away!
I gotta work in Springfield.... How is the service at BMW West Springfield? Can anyone recommend a SA? So I see a lot of great outside towns. However, which one would be a safe one for our cars? Plus, a place where I don't have to worry about getting robbed? So I guess the crime IS really that bad. More like Newark NJ or Bronx NY? |

I would be more afraid about your personal safety than the car - Springfield is rated as one of the worst cities in MA.

Having spent 8 yrs in the Happy Valley, I also agree that living in Springfield wouldn't be my first choice. It's a city with an interesting history and lots of old houses and parks but has fallen on hard times. I was in the Amherst area for grad school and loved the town and many surrounding communities. If I was going back there to work in Springfield, I'd live in Northampton (Noho to recent locals, Hamp to the true locals). Great town, good vibe, shops, restaurants, everything many people want.

Agree with all the above. No idea what your budget is, but Easthampton is quite decent and still affordable, Longmeadow, Wilbraham, Agawam are all nice, Northampton is great, albeit sort of a niche. If you're interested in being rather out in the sticks and don't mind a little commute, places like Haydenville, Hatfield, and Whately can be options.

Springfield is like most other cities with good and bad. Don't let all that bother you, there are plenty of really nice areas. One area in particular is a condo development called Georgetown Condo. These condos lie on the Spfld., Longmeadow line. Longmeadow being one of the nicest suburbs of Spfld. I would start my search there, you can rent or buy. My daughter has lived there for a while without any worry about crime or personal threat. I live in the E. Longmeadow area which again is a very nice suburb. Any question please e-mail.

I lived just outside of Springfield (Longmeadow) for 10 years and was very happy there. Longmeadow has a great public school system (great athletics, arts, academics) and is very very safe/clean. If you're going to live in Springfield I don't have a whole lot of good things to say other than agree that Sixteen Acres or the Georgetown Condos (literally on the Longmeadow/Springfield line) are the places to live. The further into the city you go the more ghetto/crime ridden it gets. Last I checked the city had the 13th highest murder rate per capita in the U.S. Oh yea and the Basketball Hall of Fame....
Any questions let me know... Quote:

Trust me, I've lived in this area all my life--Springfield is a ghetto and a couple years ago was ranked the number 1 most dangerous city in MA--in front of Boston, Worcester, Lowell, Leominster, etc. Go 20 miles north of Springfield and all is well though--Northampton, Easthampton, Amherst, Hadley, South Hadley. Also, somehow Longmeadow, East Longmeadow and Hampden have managed to stay nice even though they border Springfield to the south.

Oh, and you'll save $$$ on your car insurance if you live somewhere other than Springfield. I know some people that saved over $700/year moving from Springfield to Northampton just because of the crime rate, with everything else being the same.
