Just got threatened with arrest because I pumped my own gas

So I went to the local BP where I always fill up my car and proceeded to start filling up. The manager comes over and says its illegal to pump my own gas. I say I know but I always fill up my own gas at every station I go to including this one.

Then hes like "Id like to know who lets you pump your own gas so I can get them suspended". I was like "For real? Ive been pumping my own gas at this very station for the past 2 yrs".

So I finish pumping my own gas and he comes over. "Do you really want me to call the cops?". I said "Are you serious right now?". He then goes around the back and writes down my license plate and said "don't come back here again".

This is the most absurd thing Ive ever encountered.

So I just called the station and spoke with the owner. He said its a situation where they could get fined $500 from the fire marshal if they get caught with customers pumping their own gas. While I understand that aspect of it, the manager took it to a whole new level.

Even the owner said he recognized me and has let me do it myself while in front of him. At least he acknowledged that the manager handled the situation incorrectly.

Still, I never get this hassle from the Shell down the street from me run completely by Pakistanis. Yes, this BP gas station was American owned and operated by only american workers. I only go there because the gas is super cheap and my car runs better on BP than Shell.

Oh well, at least the owner apologized.

Yeah, it is illegal to pump your own gas in Jersey, I personally trust 99% of OTHER people more than the people that are actually pumping it.

its all about job security. if they see people pumping there own gas they will get rid of attendants. personally i never let anyone pump gas in my car, they are very rough and sometimes let the gas cap hang scratching the car...also i HATE when they have to fill the tank way past the cutoff, just to squeeze that extra .50 to .75
