LCDs in visors
I am noodling the idea of retrofitting a 3.5" LCD into the passenger visor. Not so much for GPS, but for backup cam/ other video. There are quite a few "LCD prototyping kits" out there for less that $200 which provide a screen and a tuner board. Nearly all accept/display NTSC or PAL video. The screen would fit easily into a Z4 visor, and the tuner board could probably be put along side it. I am not sure about the heat issues once you get all the parts covered and upholstered again though. Maybe a vented plastic panel for most of the inner visor surface?

OP there are plenty of people that have done what your asking - I would search around. You can retrofit the oem unit into a car without the nav with a bit of work.
As for the sunvisor thing... doesn't sound like my cup of tea. So when you want to get directions you need to have your visor in front of you field of view and stare at it while your are driving. The positioning of the oem unit is at least non-obstructive of your vision and is a quick glance from your normal line of sight out the windshield.
