Tyre life
I've just done 12,000km and I was looking at my fronts today and I thought....fark, they're looking a bit worn!! Not quite down to the indicators yet but still a bit worn towards the edge (sorry don't know the proper description for edge-of-tyre).
How many kms have you averaged from a set on PS2s?

Maybe I'm like Miss Daisy or some thing. I recall a guy at the BMW driver training day who said he was on his third set in 15,000k's, I nearly fell over. He went on to say that he drives it like he stole it.... all the time so........ |

20,000km is good going, though I squeezed 60,000km out of the X5's first set. I recently picked up a nail in the passenger rear tyre of the M3 and the dealer service people said I'd have to get a new one. Well, two obviously as you'd want an even set at the rear. They quoted $866 per PS2 tyre, which was actually the cheapest of three quotes that I had. Nevertheless, the tyre shop I go to who specialise in performance cars etc fixed the nail hole with a plug as the nail was dead straight perpendicular in the middle of the tread. Makes me wonder whether some b*stard put the nail behind my wheel in the first place!

Mine's settled at around 14-15L/100km and I drive exclusively in S mode, unless I'm in a traffic jam. I tend to boot it to the speed limit on take off so that would burn a bit more fuel.

I replaced my rears at 12,000km and they are ready for replacement again, I am now at 34,000km (though I did just compete in a motorkhana). Tyre life will depend very much on how you drive, if you like 2nd gear slides be prepared for not much life!
The fronts I replaced around 23,000km, it is difficult to judge the wear on the fronts from the outside of the tyre, they appear to have little tread depth there even when new. Considering the level of grip and feel that they provide I am happy with the lifespan, I did 4,000km in a C6 Corvette in the US this year on cheap rental-car Goodyears and they were absolutely shocking, pretty much ruining the car's cornering ability. I have just purchased a set of tyres from TireRack.com, with current exchange rates the PS2s are basically half the price of what you pay here in Australia, and shipping was USD$275 for 4 tyres. The tyres are the same as sold here, DOT-approved, with speed and load ratings marked on the side and therefore ADR approved.

Also - how did you get a hold of the C6? I'm heading over to the states next year.... so I'm thinking that could be fun

I rented the C6 through Avis - second time I did it this year and I found the trick is to book early and get the rental squared away - trying to book within a month or so of the rental can cause the price to jump up 50% or more. It was around USD$2,700 I think for 17 days and 4,000km and honestly anything less than a new Vette is absolutely painful to drive after owning an M3 (trust me we hired a PT Cruiser for a couple of days in DC and it was more fun to walk). Sorry to any PT Cruiser owners

I've done 50k with my first set in a 2006 E53 X5 and I am sure I can manage another 20k+ easily. It's my wife's daily driver, and she's is shocking when it comes to braking ... applies very late. Given that it has survived.
I've done 19k so far in my M3 with 19"s and I am sure I've got a lot more km's before I need a set. Recently I picked up a nail in the shoulder of the driver's side front and I was told I had to get a new tyre given the location of the puncture. Same story at the dealership and then at a specialist tyre place. I repaired the tyre using the same sausage they use for repairs and instead of drilling and putting the sausage, I forced the sausage into the puncture. To date no issue whatsoever. I was not prepared to pay $900 for a new tyre which would have upset the handling very badly. I have a spare set of 18" which I bought for $1000 for the dealership. The guy who was purchasing the car off the showroom wanted 19" and I bought it off the parts dept for the price. Can't go wrong. I will use the 18" for the upcoming track day with the BMW Car Club WA.

I may look at changing the OEM rubber for some cheaper YOKO's for the track day. I reckon I may get pinged for the tread depth on the PS2s - they're fine but the inspectors get a bit funny. Last track day they grumbled about the fact my rears were 3mm from the wear indicators!

Andre, I bought the set back in Nov '08, so I am not sure whether it was the same set. I didn't think you had the car back then.
Where did you get the brackets for fire extinguisher? I need one soon for the track day.

I used a place called KTEC in Osborne Park. They fitted the brackets and extinguisher. They do a lot of Porsche work. I can't remember the exact cost but it wasn't more than $300. I may have to shell out on a new set of rears as I have a plug in one of the PS2s.

I ended up buying two standard rear PS2s for the car a couple of months ago from tirerack, it cost AUD$1,150 shipped, there were no import duties and it took ten days from purchase to at my door, shipped FedEx.
Arnold at tirerack is the guy to speak to, arnold@tirerack.com.
