Games review website

Hello all,

Just wanted to let you guys know I have just launched a games review website with some colleagues.

We will get some sponsors etc but there are none for now and we have no commerical aspirations for the site. It's just a bit of fun really and hopefully will allow us to express our passion for games really... There is a forum on the back end if anyone is interested but obviously it doesn't compete in any way with this one, either for numbers or as a similar theme!

I have asked Tone and Viv if its ok for me to post this and had no answer, so if not, then I apologse but I can't see any harm as I don't benefit from it and I am really just wanting to show it off a bit

www.pixel-junkies.co.uk

Reviews of Forza and NFS Shift coming soon (albeit very late) and we will also be bringing Darksiders, Army of Two 2, Mass Effect 2 and plenty more in the near future!

Cheers
Matt

Good Luck, Matt.

The Forum software you use is very comparable to VBulletin (I use PHPBB myself). Moderating a Games Forum may be time-consuming.

I've noticed mate lol... The forum has been up for a few months now and it attracts nothing but porn...

I could actually handle the odd spamming/swearing kid but as it happens basically noone has signed up at all yet lol!!

Thanks though mate, I really dont know much about the technology being used at all to be honest - I like the writing bits and the pretty pictures haha!!

The latest version of PHPBB has good filters to stop BOTs registering.

A good trick with the previous software, or present version, is to add a custom (and thus not known to the script kiddies) profile field [question] to the registration page. Easily done in PHPBB.

Set this extra question to the negative by default, so :

Are you a porn spammer : yes (I know yes is positive, but the answer is negative if you get my drift)

So the registrant has to physically change that to : no

The scripts have NO way to predict how you will setup that question, you can even have multiple answers. It is just wee kiddies taking an existing script that prefills the default registration page, with captcha number and directly submits it. That extra question will snooker them

Cut down any BOT registrations on my Forums to 0.

See here : http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/cust...-spammer-tool/

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewt...78455#p9778455

Leave you more time to sort out the warring games fans, and write articles

I can only echo what Dave says about the custom field. I was constantly clearing out 10's of bot sign ups every day from my forum. One simple question configured as stated and I've not had a single one in 6 months!

Mine was a simple "How many letters in the word YELLOW?", preset to zero.

Alex has asked me to thank Dave - so cheers for that, we've implemented your suggestion!!

I'm hoping for some more reviews to go live later today, no major pressure for hits yet as we have no sponsors anyway, but we're all sort of hoping that the more work we do - the more people will want to get involved, send us promos, chat to us and all that stuff.

Cheers for the support guys and without meaning to plug too blatantly - some forum members would be REALLY good

Glad to hear that mate, again, forum needs people on it lol

I'm more than happy to take some suggestions etc from people - going back to the video point Roger... We have experimented with it in the News section so check it out... More to follow!!

Everyone else... We have some very cool ideas... One article which has been suggested involves cars, a photographer and some videogame comparisons so we may even ask for some participation

Thanks for the support.
