Actual width of VMR 713's

Recently mounted my 19" 8.5" & 9.5" VMR 713's with 235/265 Hankook V12's and noticed the rim lip exceeds the width of the tire to the point if I lay the mounted wheel/tire on a floor the sidewall is about a 1/4" off the floor. Really no protection at all on the rim. Not sure if it's the tire design or size. When measuring the width of the rims from outer lip to lip, they measure 9.7 and 10.7. Am I measuring from the wrong point?

Certain tires have less or more protection of the lip of the wheel. Some tires that do an excellent job of protecting the lip of a wheel, are the Michelin PS2 tires, as well as certain Continental tires.

Some tires have less of this lip protection, just like the Hankook tires. Here's a photo of the PS2 that has good protection:

If you look closely you can see it on the top of the rear wheel, that there is an extra bit of rubber protecting the lip from being curbed.

So in essence, it's not the wheel, it's just the tire design.

The 8.5" and 9.5" meatures are from inside the wheel, making the total width approx 1" wider.

Would a 245/275 set-up help or are those tire sizes too wide?

Those will provide more meat to cover the wheel however that is an aggressive setup for your car and would require fender rolling.

The measurements of a 9.5 inch wheel are in the inside width, not the outer-most widths.

275's generally require fender rolling but would be the better tire choice for a 9.5 inch wheel.

Im in the same boat as you, except with a 10 inch wheel, im debating on rolling me fenders and going 275's.

My 265's on the 33 offset leave more than a 1/2 inch of space between thire and fender so I'm guessing certain brands of 275's would fit without rolling. I think the Hankkooks would fit, not sure about the PS2's. However the Michelin and Hankook web sites list virtually identical measurements.

OP: Remmib and JPSlick basically answered your question (thank you!!). All tires are constructed and designed differently, to where the width and shoulder shape can affect the way it looks or fits (when running a flush fitment). For the most part you can ask qualified vendors and even other members for such information. We mount and balance tires on a daily basis, even our sales guys are trained to do mounting and balancing... so we are able to convey a bit more fitment information to the customer

Any other tire you can suggest with a similar sidewall design as the PS2's? Looking for something a little less $$>

That's a set of Michellin PS2 that we did on 19" CS7s for E90Post member TL. There are more pictures available and you can see how well the rim is protected. The PS2 do an excellent job at guarding the lip and that's a 265/30/19 tire. I have seen 255/30/19 PS2 on our CSL and they look as most 265/30/19 do.

As others have said it depends on the design on the tire. Also, most wheels actual width are about 1" wider than their given width.

Certain Continentals can do the job well... What I would do is actually go to tirerack.com and they show a very large picture of the tire mounted on a wheel, just check that to see which one has a good amount of rubber hanging outside the wheel, that should help
